“rent to own”

FADE IN

int. restaurant

A man walks in. The place is semi-crowded. He’s waiting to talk to the hostess, but there is an irate couple talking her ear off.

Andi

(off camera)

Jonathan?

John turns toward her. A woman is sitting at a bench by the door. She stands. She is about 5’5”, a little heavy set. She is dressed in a pretty blouse over a tank, with nice dress slacks. Her jewelry is tasteful, her make-up is minimal. Her hair looks air dried, and it suits her.

John

Yes. Ms. Parks?

Andi

(smiles)

Nice to meet you.

She puts her hand out and he shakes it. He smiles back, apparently little surprised by the greeting.

Andi

I hope you don’t mind, I didn’t ask them to seat me until you got here. They’re so busy, and I didn’t want to take up space if you got caught in traffic or anything.

John

That’s very considerate; most people wouldn’t think to do that.

The couple talking to the hostess gets very loud, and leaves in a huff, nearly knocking into John on their way.

John

Case in point.

The hostess walks up to them.

Hostess

Ms. Parks, I am so sorry about that. If this is the gentleman you were waiting for, I can seat you immediately.

Andi

Yes it is. Thank you, Celia.

They are walked to a table by a window. After they sit, a waitress comes over and takes their drink orders. Andi talks to her briefly, and it’s obvious they know one another. She leaves.

John

Is she a friend of yours?

Andi

I’d like to think so. She’s worked here for, must be five years now. I come here a lot; it’s one of my favorite restaurants. Nice, but not excessively pretentious.  They also hire good people, and treat them well. Most restaurants, it feels like the staff is constantly changing. Paul, the waiter over there, has been here 8 years now. And Paulo, the chef, is fantastic.

John

Wow. I mean, pardon me for saying so, but that is really rather remarkable.

Andi

(quizzically)

What is?

John

Well, people…that’s to say, people with means, don’t usually get to know people so easily, at least not people who are, well…

Andi

(smiling)

Without means?

John

Yeah. Sorry, that was probably an inappropriate remark. I’m a little nervous.

Andi

(surprised and flattered)

Nervous? Why on earth would you be nervous?

John

It’s just, I deal with…is rich people a bad term?

Andi

(laughing)

Not last time I checked. I suppose, like most things, it’s all about how you say it.

John

(smiling)

Right. As I was saying, I deal with a fair amount of rich people on a daily basis. I find it so refreshing to meet someone who would sit in a lobby to make the day go easier for restaurant staff. That you know some of their names too, borders on astonishing.

Andi

Ok stop, your making me blush.

She looks down and is trying to compose herself, but can’t stop grinning. She doesn’t see that he’s looking at her with serious appreciation.

Andi

So why would that make you nervous?

John

Well, for one, it throws you for a loop. You expect certain behavior from certain people. Seeing something outside the norm is jarring. And then there’s the fact that I’m trying to impress you, and so far doing a rather lousy job of it.

The waitress walks up before she can reply. She sets down the drink.

Andi

Oops, we forgot to look. You look for something while I order. I know the menu pretty well by now.

When John opens his menu and starts looking at it, the waitress turns her back on him so he can’t see her face. Andi looks up to order.

Waitress

(silently mouthing)

He’s hot!

Andi giggles and almost chokes. John looks up.

John

Are you alright?

Andi

Yeah, just got a tickle in my throat.

He smiles and looks back at the menu. After she takes both of their orders, she winks at Andi and walks away fanning herself with the menus. John doesn’t see this, but when he looks back at her she’s smiling, and he notices.

John

(smiling back at her)

What?

Andi

Nothing. Um, what were we talking about? Oh right, impressions. For the record, I was thoroughly impressed when you walked in. Sorry if that sounds a little sexist.

John

Wow, now who’s blushing?

Andi

Sorry, probably not the best thing I could have said, but I must admit, Anne didn’t do you justice.

John

Anne?

Andi

Yeah, your friend’s friend, the one who arranged this meeting?

John

Oh, I thought her name was Tina. I’m having problems with my service. I know, it’s a little old fashioned to even have a service, but usually they are very reliable. There’s this new girl there, and I’ve been trying not to complain, because she at least gets times and information right. It’s only names that seem to be a problem. But she’s just so enthusiastic.

Andi

Yeah, I’m a sucker for that too. You just hate to break their hearts.

John

Exactly. So anyway, Ms. Parks, is it ok if I call you Tanya?

Andi

No, but you can call me Alexandra. I prefer Andi though. She is bad with names, it seems.

John

(embarrassed)

Very bad. Sorry.

Andi

No problem.

John

Isn’t Andi usually short for Andrea?

Andi

True, but I can be a bit of an oddball at times.

The waitress brings their food, and they chit chat, and almost flirt a little, while eating.

John

So, I imagine you have some questions for me.

Andi

Well, to be honest I had no idea what we were gonna talk about, but I do have some questions now.

John

Shoot.

Andi

College?

John

NYU, with a year at Studio Art Centers International in Florence.

Andi

See, impressed already.

John

Thank you.

Andi

So, are you where you expected to be?

John

Sorry?

Andi

You know, in your life. I imagine you had some interesting dreams when you were in college. How are they going so far?

John

Not as bad as you’d imagine. I guess we never quite know what we’ll end up doing. But I’m not unhappy, that’s for certain. You take what comes to you, and you do the best you can with it, and your fate will find you.

Andi

Romantic notion. Though, for the record, the philosophy is pretty close to my heart.

John

Really? Had to roll with many punches?

Andi

A few. And I think I’m about to do it again.

John

And that means?

Andi

Can I be extremely up front with you John?

John

(curious)

Please.

Andi

When Anne first suggested setting this up, I thought she was nuts. I’ve come to a better understanding now, of why she did. When I said I was impressed, I was understating it. I’m extremely impressed by you.

John

(confused)

Thank you.

Andi

But I’m afraid, this isn’t what I was expecting, and I’m the one thrown for a loop. This has been the best 30 minutes I’ve spent, in a really long time.

John

(smiles)

Me too.

Andi

What is your stance on long term arrangements?

John

Sorry, I don’t know what you mean.

Andi

This is going to sound strange but, I’m interested in a little more time than you are generally asked to commit.

John

What kind of time?

Andi

Maybe, six months?

John

Six months? Wow, yeah fairly unusual.

Andi

First of all, let me say this is not what I planned. I wasn’t even sure I could meet you. I almost chickened out. I have no illusions about who you are, John. Anne made it all quite clear. I was a little surprised there were men like you still around, but I’m not the kind of person to pass judgment on others.

John

I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying.

Andi

I’m not the kind of person who likes short term relationships. And I’m in a unique position right now, in that I don’t want to be alone, and my alternatives are limited. So what I’m asking you is this. Would you consider making me your exclusive client, and live with me, for 6 months? At the end of that time, we can review the situation and discuss whether either of us is interested in extending the term.

John

I think there’s some…

Andi

Please, let me finish before you answer. I would provide all living expenses, and I would give you a reasonable allowance. All I would ask is that you spend a reasonable amount of time with me, and you wouldn’t be entertaining anyone else in that time.

She stops, and seems to be experiencing some kind of stomach pain. She is taking deep breaths and is grimacing.

John

Andi?

The waitress sees Andi and comes to the table. She doesn’t seem surprised, but concerned.

Waitress

Ms. Parks, are you alright?

Andi breaths for a second, and then the pain seems to fade.

Andi

I’m fine.

Waitress

Are you sure? Do you want me to call Dr. Bates?

Andi

No, honestly, I’m alright. Thank you, Ginny. It’s ok.

Waitress

Alright, but no more wine.

Andi smiles at the waitress as she takes the glass of red wine and walks away.

John

I take it she knows what just happened.

Andi

Yes.

John

Care to fill me in?

Andi

I was literally about to tell you. So please don’t think I was going to keep it a secret. I have to have surgery in a few weeks. A stomach thing, I don’t want to get into the details. I am not asking you to take care of me or anything. I’ll have people for that. But, honestly, that’s why I’m suggesting such an unusual arrangement. I just want someone who’ll keep me company, who’ll be around, who I can talk to. Someone to, pay a little attention. You know, the more I try to qualify this, the deeper I’m digging myself into the hole. Maybe this wasn’t the best idea.

John

Wait, I think I’m a little behind, because I’m just starting to get exactly what you’re asking. And you’re friend, Anne, who arranged this meeting. She knew this was what you were thinking?

Andi

No, she didn’t. It’s just a crazy idea I suddenly had. Her only interest was to find me some more temporary companionship. I told her I wasn’t sure I could even talk to a, is gigolo a bad term?

John

(tries to hide his surprise)

Um, n….no, not generally, I don’t think.

Andi

It sounds like I’m demeaning you anyway; I think I’ll avoid it. I wasn’t even sure I could handle this lunch, much less anything else. Please don’t misunderstand; I’m not saying I’m not interested in how men in your line generally spend time with women. But it’s not really my primary motivation. I just want someone to be around. I’ve had a rough year already, and with this surgery…

(sighs)

I’m tired of getting screwed around. I’m tired of finding out that guys are more interested in my bank account than me. I know that sounds very cynical.  It’s frustrating me, thinking that way. But…I’m not going to bore you with my romantic history. The point is; I think this may be the solution. No illusions, at least none we don’t already know about.  I’m talking too much, what are your thoughts?

John takes a deep breath. He seems completely unsure what to say, but eventually he gets it out.

John

So what you’re asking is that, for the next 6 months, I would be, essentially your boyfriend. I would live with you, for that entire time; just you and me.

Andi

Yes. Also, I would make arrangements to fulfill our contract in the event things shouldn’t go well with the surgery. So you don’t have to worry about that.

John

Are you saying you could die?

Andi

Oh no, it’s not like that. There is absolutely no reason to think that I won’t make it through this just fine. Honestly. I just meant that, surgery is surgery, there’s a reason they give you that, “risk of complications’ speech. I just wanted you to assure you that I’m not going to leave you high and dry, in that eventuality.

John

Wow that is a lot to think about.

Andi

I realize that. If you’d like some time to think it over, I can certainly understand.

John

Let me ask you a question?

Andi

Ok.

John

Why me? I mean, even if this thought did just occur to you, you probably could have checked out more options. Obviously your friend Anne knows people. Why are you asking me?

Andi

Two reasons. You look like someone who enjoys intellect. Something tells me you prefer a woman who can have a conversation.

John

(smiles)

That’s true.

Andi

And I like your smile.

John

(blushes again)

I see.

Andi

(looks down at her plate)

We’ve barely touched our food. Suddenly I’m not so hungry.

John

Me either.

Andi

Doggie bags?

John

(smiles at her)

Sure.

John watches her as she calls the waitress over and asks her to have their food taken and put in to-go bags. The waitress calls a busboy over and has him take the plates to the back. She chats with Andi, for a couple of minutes. John can see that Andi is pleased to have a distraction from their conversation. It’s apparent she’s a little appalled she made the request. He sees her sigh a little and smiles. The busboy brings out the bags, and sets one in front of each of them. Andi and the waitress exchange goodbyes.

John

We didn’t get the check.

Andi

They have my card on file here. It saves some time for them and me. I really do eat here a lot. Shall we?

John gets up and pulls out her chair. She thanks him, and they grab their bags and walk out of the restaurant.

Cut to:

Ext. outside restaurant

John is about to say something when Andi turns around and talks fast.

Andi

Look, I’m a little embarrassed. What I was suggesting didn’t sound so outrageous until I thought about it a little. But that doesn’t mean I’ve dismissed the idea. I really do think it could benefit both of us. But if I’ve made you uncomfortable, and I sense I have, I’m sorry. If you’d like to just forget the whole afternoon, I’ll understand.

John

There’s nothing I want less right now.

Andi

(smiles with relief)

Ok.

(she takes out a business card and starts to write on the back)

I’m putting my home number on here, and my cell. Just, think about it, and give me a call.

Andi hands him the card, and their fingers touch. They both seem to catch their breath for a second.

Andi

You can usually catch me best on my cell, but sometimes I forget to carry it with me in the house. I’d appreciate if you’d call and let me know relatively soon. Frankly, if you don’t, I might just chicken out. Maybe by Monday, if that’s ok?

John

Yes.

Andi

Great, then I guess I’ll…

John

(interrupts her)

I mean yes, I’m saying yes, to all of it.

Andi is taken back a bit. She is breathing heavier.

Andi

Really?

John

Yes.

Andi

Ok.

(runs her hand through her hair)

Oh man, now what? Um, you know what; my lawyer’s office is just 10 minutes from here. We could go get the contract set up right now.

John

Contract?

Andi

Well yes. He will throw a fit at me if I don’t get this in writing. Plus, I’m asking for something a bit unusual from you here. I figured you’d want some legal security.

John

Oh sure, that makes sense.

Andi hails a cab. He holds the door open for her, and then walks around to the other side and gets in. He’s blinking and seems completely confused about what he just did. When he gets in, she is grinning broadly. He can’t help but return her smile. They are a little caught in each others eyes when the cab drive clears his throat.

Andi

1841 Broadway please.

They sit quietly in the cab, both casting glances. Finally he slips his hand over hers and slides his fingers between hers. She returns the grip.

Andi

(she’s looking down)

I’m sorry if I’m being awkward, but that’s how I feel. I imagine you’re somewhat used to this, at least more than I am.

John

(under his breath)

I imagine I would be.

Andi

(looking up)

What?

John

Nothing. It’s fine. I don’t mind taking the lead.

He smiles at her, then lifts her hand and kisses the inside of her wrist. She shudders a little, and smiles back at him. Before they can continue the conversation, the cab stops at a tall office building. She hands the cab driver a 50 dollar bill and gets out as a doorman opens her door. John notices the money, and the surprised look on the drivers face, and gets out too. He talks to her as they enter the building and go through the lobby to the elevator.

cut to:

Int. office building lobby

John

Nice tip.

Andi

Sorry?

John

Did you know you gave him a 50?

Andi

Oh yeah, I usually do.

John

And I saw, when we left the restaurant. You also left a 50.

Andi

Yeah.

John

Do you do that all the time?

Andi

(nonchalant)

I guess so.

John

You’re very generous.

Andi

Most of the time, they can use it a lot more than I can. It drives Freddy mad, especially when I won’t let him file it on my taxes.

John

Freddy?

Andi

My lawyer and financial manager. His father was actually my father’s lawyer, so we’ve known each other since I was a kid. When his father retired, it was only fitting that he carried on dealing with the family money. Unfortunately, he’s also very protective, particularly since my parents died. He was the executor of their estate. Even though I wasn’t a kid anymore, I think he felt it also made him responsible for me.

They get on an elevator alone.

INT. ELEVATOR

John

When did they die?

Andi

I was 22, so that would be 11 years now.

John

If you don’t mind my asking…

Andi

A car accident; a patch of ice.

John

I’m sorry.

Andi

It’s ok. It was a long time ago. I miss them, they were wonderful. You and my mother would have a lot to talk about. She studied art. She was enthralled by it.

John

Really? And your father?

Andi

He was enthralled by her. He doted on her, as my grandmother says. She told me once, that the first time my father laid eyes on my mother; the families were already making wedding plans. It took him a whole month to ask, but half the arrangements were already made. They were married in two months, and I showed up just short of 9 months after that.

She’s smiling wistfully, and he almost doesn’t realize they’ve come to the right floor and she’s getting off the elevator. He quickly catches up. She walks to a receptionist’s desk a few feet away.

INT. FREDDY’S OUTER OFFICE

Andi

Hi Natalie.

Natalie

Ms. Parks. Good afternoon. Did you have a meeting with Mr. Davies today?

Andi

(sheepish)

No, I don’t. But I wondered if he’d have a few minutes. There is something I need drawn up, and since I was in the area I thought I’d just stop in. But if he’s busy, I can make an appointment for another day.

Natalie

Let me see.

(she checks the computer)

He actually is free for about 20 minutes. Let me give him a call.

(she hits a button her phone)

Mr. Davies. Ms. Parks is here. No sir, she just stopped in and hoped she could discuss something with you.

(listening)

2 o’clock.

(listens again)

Yes sir.

Andi

So?

Natalie

Go on back. Can I get you anything? Soda?

Andi

I’m fine thank you.

(to John)

Would you like anything?

John

I’m good, thanks.

Andi

This is Natalie, by the way. You should see her type; it’s almost a little scary. You’d swear she has a third hand. Speaking of which, Freddy told me last week, and I almost forgot. Where’s the ring?

Natalie smiles and holds up her left hand to show a modest but pretty engagement ring.

Natalie

Isn’t it gorgeous?

Andi

It’s beautiful. Congratulations.

Natalie

Thank you. Actually thank you twice. I wouldn’t be wearing this ring if not for your advice.

Andi

Don’t be silly. You’d have come to your senses eventually.

Natalie

I’d like to think so.

Andi

I assume that my sage wisdom will at least merit an invite though, right?

Natalie

You’d really come?

Andi

Of course, I’d love to be there, if it’s not too presumptuous to ask.

Natalie

Of course not. We’d love to have you there. Parker says he’s dying to meet the woman who saved his future.

Andi

Aww. That’s sweet.

Natalie

Isn’t it? I assure you, you will be getting one of the first invitations.

Andi

Excellent. We’d better get back there though, or Freddy’s gonna grumble at me. Oh, and would you mind terribly call Brinkley’s and have a car sent around. I had Jackson drive me into town, but I didn’t want to make him sit while I was at lunch.

Natalie

I’ll call them right now.

Andi

Thanks.

They walk down a hallway to a big office. Just as they’re about to walk in, John whispers in Andi’s ear.

John

Sage advice?

Andi

I’ll tell you later.

John grabs the door and holds it open for her. She smiles at him and walks into the office.

int. freddy’s office

A man, about 45, is sitting at the desk. He smiles and gets up to come around the desk. He hugs Andi.

Freddy

I was wondering where you’d gotten to.

Andi

Sorry, I hadn’t gotten to congratulate Natalie yet.

Freddy

Right. You should’ve seen her last week. She would not stop smiling. It was actually kind a cute.

Andi

(smiling)

Freddy, this is John…

Andi turns to John, rolls her eyes, and is almost laughing.

Andi

Anne never told me your last name.

John

(smiling back at her)

Hampton.

Andi

Ok, Freddy, this is John Hampton. John, meet Frederick S. Davies, the 3rd, esquire.

Freddy

One of these days you’re going to stop thinking that’s funny.

Andi

(she smiles at him)

Perhaps, but not today.

Freddy

(shakes John’s hand)

Please, call me Fred. So Andi, you’re in a good mood. What’s the occasion?

Andi

(shy)

Well that’s why I’m here. I need you to draw a contract up for me.

Freddy

Ok.

(he walks to his desk and gets a legal pad)

Parties?

Andi

Myself and John.

Freddy

(looks confused)

Ok, what’s the purpose?

Andi

A business arrangement of a personal nature.

Freddy

(looks at her skeptically)

What exactly are you up to Andi?

Andi

(looks at john)

John, I assume you don’t mind if I speak frankly?

John

Please.

Andi

(to freddy)

John has agreed to live with me, as my companion, for the next 6 months. You will see that his living expenses are taken care of as part of the household budget. And he will receive a monthly allowance.

(turns to John)

Is $5000 reasonable?

Freddy

$5000 dollars a month?!

John

(taken aback)

I think that you’re being overly generous again Andi.

Andi

Am I? I’m afraid I’m not sure what’s appropriate. $4500?

Freddy looks shocked and is now watching John suspiciously. John is basically ignoring him.

John

I think that might still be a bit excessive.

Andi

Generally, your end of the negotiation works up, not down.

John

I just think…

Andi

Ok, let’s make this easy. I just won’t ask.

(she turns to Freddy)

Put it down at $4500 a month.

Freddy

Andi, could we talk in private?

John

Of course, I’ll just…

Andi

John, please. Have a seat.

Andi points to a couch along one wall. He sits down and she turns to Freddy.

Andi

If you want me to be indiscreet, and give you a detailed explanation of how this arrangement came to be made, I will. But I don’t think anyone in this room wants that. Freddy, you know me. I may be gullible in affairs of the heart, but not in business. I can assure you, this was my proposal, and I was in no way charmed or seduced into it.

Freddy

Andi, you can’t be serious.

(to John)

I’m sorry, I don’t mean to offend you, but this is just…

(back to Andi)

I told you, I know some good guys, and Jeanie has been dying to set you up with someone. I’m sure John here is a great guy, but you don’t have to do this.

Andi

Freddy, the last thing I need right now is one of Jeanie’s fix-ups. Need I remind you of the last one?

Freddy

I’m sorry about that. You can’t imagine how bad I feel.

Andi

I don’t want you to feel bad. You couldn’t have guessed, and neither could Jeanie. But right now, this makes more sense.

(to John)

Forgive me.

(to Freddy)

I don’t want to be alone right now. With everything going on, I just don’t.

Freddy

Andi, you won’t be alone. I know this surgery is scaring you a little, but it’s going be fine. And you’ve got me, and you’re grandmother, and the staff.

Andi

That’s not what I mean, and you know it. Friends and family is one thing but…

Freddy

(interrupting)

Andi…

Andi

(not snippy but a bit dominating)

Freddy, this is not a discussion. I’m not asking for your permission. I’ve made my decision, and nothing you say is going to affect it. Now are you going to draw up the papers, or do I have to have someone else do it?

Freddy

(resigned)

Fine, any specific details I need to include.

John

An agreement that our…arrangement will be exclusive for the duration, on both sides.

Freddy

Ok.

Andi

And a proviso that, if something should go wrong with the surgery, John’s living expenses and allowance will continue through the six months,

(sarcastically)

even if I don’t.

Freddy and John

Andi!

Andi

Jeez, just trying to lighten the room a little.

John

It’s not funny.

Freddy

I should think not.

Andi

Relax gentlemen.

Freddy

(frustrated)

Anything else; besides, of course, the non-disclosure agreement?

Andi

Freddy.

Freddy

Don’t argue with me on this Andi. No offense John. But I don’t want to read some tell all book about Andi in a year.

(to Andi)

And I will not draw up one damn document if that’s not included Andi. As your lawyer, I would be remiss. As your friend, I would be an ass. Part of my job is to look after your interests and your reputation.

Andi

I understand that, but…

John

I agree with you Fred. I think it should be included.

John gets up and walks over to Andi. He has gotten his bearings in the conversation and is clearly moving to lead more than follow.

Andi

John, it’s not necessary. Honestly, I’m not worried.

John

He’s right. It’s perfectly reasonable. Don’t argue, ok?

He smiles at her, and kisses her on the forehead. Freddy is surprised by the gesture and John’s reaction to the NDA. He’s still leery, but less suspicious.

Andi

(beaming)

Alright, if you both insist.

Freddy

We do.

John

We do.

Andi pulls her eyes from John, with effort, and turns to Freddy.

Andi

How soon can you have this done?

Freddy

Not much to it. I’ll have something sent over to the house tomorrow evening probably.

Andi

Terrific. Oh, also, arrange for a car.

John

I don’t need a car.

Andi

(to John)

Jackson is my driver and head of the grounds. It’s not always reasonable to have him drive into town,

(to Freddy)

and yes I still refuse to hire a full time driver. It’s silly and wasteful.

(to John)

Living outside the city, you’ll want a car to get around in. Unless…

John

What?

Andi

Well, the restoration on the jeep is done.

Freddy

Oh yeah, how’d it come out?

Andi

Fantastic. It’s gorgeous. They got the color perfectly matched. I swear I wanna send Tom Hanks a picture.

John

What are you talking about?

Andi

A project of mine; one of my few guilty pleasures when it comes to spending. I’m a movie nut. And I’ve been buying certain vehicles that I loved from different movies, and having them restored and turned into hybrids. My latest is a 1984 Jeep CJ-7. It’s the same one that Tom Hanks drove in Nothing in Common.

John

That’s the one with Jackie Gleason in it, right?

Andi

Yup.

John

That was a cool Jeep.

Andi

You can drive it, if you want to.

John leans in and kisses her cheek.

John

I’d be honored.

Freddy rolls his eyes. His phone rings and he answers. He speaks to Natalie for a minute and then hangs up.

Freddy

Sorry to cut this short, but my next meeting is here. I’ll send the paperwork to the house when it’s done.

Andi walks over and kisses him in the cheek.

Andi

Thank you Freddy.

Freddy

(grinning)

My pleasure, as always.

They hug and John holds the door for Andi, following her out. They wave goodbye to Natalie as she’s showing Freddy’s next appointment to his office.

int. elevator

Andi and John are quiet on the elevator. There are always people on with them, but they keep looking at each other and smiling.

int. lobby

When they get to the lobby, they walk outside, where a car is waiting.

ext. outside in a business district

Andi

So…

John

So…

Andi

I’m lost again.

Andi has her head down, so she doesn’t see John struggling. He seems to make up his mind about something, and takes a deep breath. Then he tries to act slightly seductive as he replies.

John

That’s ok, I’m sure the driver can find his way to your place.

Andi

(giggles)

I meant…

John

I know.

(he runs a finger up her arm)

I’m all yours, take me home.

Andi

(smiles and shivers)

Are you sure? Technically there’s no legal agreement yet.

John

I think we can consider this a verbal contract for now, don’t you?

He leans down and kisses her tenderly. He continues to kiss her while they talk.

Andi

Do you want to stop and get some things? Or would you rather go tomorrow?

John

Tomorrow.

Andi

(a little dopey)

Ok.

He takes her hand and leads her to the car. The driver is waiting and opens the door. John holds her hand as she climbs in, and then goes around getting in the other side.

int. limo

Andi is smiling, like she heard a cute joke, when John gets in.

John

What?

Andi

You know, I am capable of scooting. You don’t always have to go all the way around.

John

Right.

Andi

Be right back.

John looks at her quizzically. Andi gets up and moves to the opposite seat, talking to the driver through the window.

Andi

So Marty, how’s your daughter doing with the piano lessons?

John smiles and sits back as Andi talks to the driver most of the way to her house, casting small glances his way every few minutes.

They arrive in a house outside the city. It is obviously a large estate, and the house is very large and spread out. It is also clearly a very old, but very well maintained, house. After the gate, they drive up a long path and then turn onto a circular drive that runs in front of the house. A man comes down and opens the door.

cut to:

ext. andi’s house

Andi gets out of the car and John follows. He stands to the side while she says her goodbye’s to Marty, signs something for him, and the car pulls away. Then she turns to the man. He is about 50, distinguished. He is wearing a nice suit, minus the tie.

Andi

Good afternoon Thomas.

Thomas

Good afternoon Miss.

Andi

Thomas, this is John Hampton. John, this is Thomas Reinhardt. He’d call himself my butler, but he’s so much more.

Thomas

(blushes slightly)

Pleasure to meet you, sir.

John reaches out to shake his hand, which seems to surprise Thomas.

JOHN

Likewise.

Andi smiles at them in turn, and then walks to the house. Thomas waits for John to follow her and then follows him. Andi walks into the house, and talks to Thomas along the way to the kitchen.

Andi

Thomas, John will be staying for the next several months. Please have the green bedroom on the second floor prepared for him.

Thomas

Yes Miss Andi.

Thomas is acting a little stiff as if he’s confused and worried by this information but refuses to be obvious.

int. andi’s kitchen

Andi kicks her shoes next to the island in the middle of the room. Then she takes off her jacket and blouse, tossing them on a chair, so she’s only wearing her silk tank and slacks.

Andi

Ugh, that’s better.

John stands against the counter and smiles, she doesn’t notice, but Thomas does.

Andi

As I was saying, have the green bedroom made up, and make the rest of the household aware that he’ll be here. He’ll be bringing his things tomorrow, and get him anything else he needs. Freddy is already aware that his necessities will be handled with the household accounts. He’ll make any necessary adjustments to the household budget.

Thomas

Yes Miss Andi. Will there be anything else?

Andi

Just one more thing.

Andi walks over and plays with Thomas’ lapel.

andi

What is this?

Thomas

(hiding a smile)

A jacket, Miss.

Andi

Are you cold Thomas?

Thomas

No Miss.

Andi

I know you finally gave in on the no-ties thing, but you really are not going to budge on the jacket, are you?

Thomas

No Miss.

Andi

(pouts child like and bats her eyelids)

Please?

Thomas

(parental smile)

No Miss.

Andi

Fine, you old curmudgeon.

She gives him a hug, which he returns. John has been watching the exchange with amusement and tenderness. Thomas kisses Andi on the forehead and steps back.

Thomas

I’ll see to everything Miss.

Before Thomas leaves he throws an “I’m watching you,” look at John. He doesn’t think Andi sees him, but she does.

Andi

Don’t worry, he’s harmless. Not that he wouldn’t beat you senseless with an umbrella to protect me; but otherwise he’s a pussycat.

John walks over to her, picks her up at the waist, and then takes a couple of steps and sets her down on a countertop. He then puts her arms around his waist. She’s a little flustered, particularly when he starts running a finger down her jaw line.

John

Green bedroom?

Andi

Yeah, you’ll like it. It’s a nice room.

John

Why do I need a room?

(kisses her neck)

It’s not as if I’ll be sleeping in it.

Andi

(obviously lost in his touch)

You might prefer to, some nights.

John

(pulls back and looks at her intently)

Why would I prefer that?

Andi

(pushes him back gently)

Some nights, I’m not going to be very fit company. My, stomach issues, have unpleasant symptoms occasionally. Mostly it’s only a problem if I eat certain foods, but that isn’t always necessary to trigger a bad patch. I don’t want you to feel like you don’t have anywhere else to go on those nights.

John

I don’t understand. Isn’t that part of why I’m here? To look after you, when you need someone?

Andi

I told you, I don’t expect you to take care of me. I’m a big girl; I can take care of myself. You’re not here to be my nurse.

John

I’m not talking about that.

He turns his back to her and slides close again, wrapping her arms around to touch in front of him now.

John

I’m just saying, when you’re feeling particularly lousy,

(he holds her hands and kisses them)

isn’t that when you want someone to hold on to?

Andi

I suppose, but I’d just as soon not subject you to that. Anyway, how about a tour?

John

(lets her change the subject)

Ok.

(slides his hands up her thighs)

Where should we start?

Andi

(closes her eyes)

I really can’t focus when you’re doing that.

John

(turns around smiling)

That’s sort of the point.

He kisses her softly, then his lips trail down her neck. She pushes him back again, enough so she can hop off of the counter.

Andi

We won’t bother with the whole house, way too big. But let’s start with the downstairs rooms that get the most use.

She grabs her shoes and clothes from where she tossed them and walks out of the kitchen. He is smiling as he follows her into a hallway. They walk across the hallway to a large room just beside the front door.

int. light room

It’s a very large room, with a lot of light. It’s decorated in bright blues and soft purples. Tasteful, but definitely not what one might expect to find in a ‘stately home’.

Andi

This was once called the sitting room. I call it, the Light room. It’s great for sitting and reading. I know the colors are a little feminine, but I can’t stand a lot of dark shades, and I think the colors just brighten the room even more. It probably would be pretty good for painting too, though there’s a solarium on the back of the house that’s better. Though I suppose it all depends on what kind of light you like.

John

It’s lovely, really. You almost feel like you’re in a cloud or something.

Andi

(smiles)

That is the idea.

John

So you paint?

Andi

Oh no. My mom did, and that’s why I know some things about light and space, but I am a horrible artist. I honestly can’t draw a good stick figure.

John

(laughs)

I’m sure you’re exaggerating.

Andi

(walking toward a door at the other end of the room)

I’m really not. Can’t sculpt, can’t draw, and can’t do anything tactile when it comes to art. My mom tried, she really did. Classes upon classes, but nothing took. My dad said my brain was wired for the written word. I can describe what makes something beautiful, I just can’t recreate it visually.

John

(smiling)

Well we all have our talents.

(Andi opens a sliding door to another room)

Wow. What on earth do you call this?

int. conversation room

The room is full of an eclectic collection of items. There are lots of couches and chairs arranged in different configurations. There is art everywhere. There are sculptures in various locations. There are many different kinds of paintings and drawings on the walls. It almost should be unpleasant, without any unifying theme. But the room is laid out to make different areas of interest, so it feels like a mini-museum.

Andi

I call this, the Conversation Room. This is another thing of my little personal projects. When I find something that I find interesting, something that I think would spark some fun dialogue, it goes in here. I’m constantly changing this room, but I just love to come in here and see something different all the time.

Andi walks over to a large sculpture. It is a few feet long and it appears to be a smoking pipe made out of brass plumbing pieces.

Andi

And this is the closest thing I ever made to art.

John

You made this?

Andi

Yeah. Like I said, conversation pieces.

John

Harkening back to your misspent youth?

Andi

(grinning)

I wouldn’t call it misspent, and youth is a little too narrow too.

John

Oh really?

Andi

Great for the nausea. I’m a supporter of some of the local legalization groups. Gets Freddy’s goat a lot, when that ends up in the papers. I love this piece. Not because I made it so much as how people react to it. What do you think?

John

It’s well constructed, that’s for sure. Is it...functional?

Andi

(laughing)

I’m sure it is, but I’ve never tried it. Now that would be a party to remember, if I fired this baby up.

John

(laughing too)

Oh yeah. You know, I’ve never heard the term Renaissance Woman, but if there is such a thing, I’m starting to think it’s a perfect term for you.

Andi smiles and leads him on. She continues to take him to different rooms. They are all very individually decorated, though most not as themed as the first two. Eventually they go upstairs, and she shows him his bedroom.

int. green bedroom

Andi

So, this is the green bedroom. Most of the other bedrooms have a decidedly feminine look. But this one should be ok for you. It was my dad’s room when he was a boy. It shares a bathroom with the yellow bedroom next door.

She turns and realizes he hasn’t actually come into the room. He’s standing in the doorway, leaning against the frame.

John

And your room?

Andi

Just a few doors down.

John

Show me.

Andi nervously slides past him, trying not to come into contact. He follows her down the hall to a large room with double doors.

int. andi’s bedroom.

It’s obviously a master suite. The room itself is huge. There is a large walk in closet off through one door, and a large opulent looking bathroom is through a door beside it. There is a terrace, accessible through two different sets of double glass doors. There is a lot of sun. The room is mostly white, with splashes of deep burgundy and rose around. The bed is positioned to get the best breeze with the doors open, which they are. The gauzy material wrapped around each of the four posts is swaying slightly in the breeze.

John

Beautiful.

Andi

Thank you. I completely redid the room when I moved in. I thought about keeping it as it was, but I knew Mom and Dad would’ve wanted me to make it my own.

John

I’m sure.

Andi has her back to him. He walks up to her and puts his hands on her hips. He starts kissing the back of her neck, and sliding his hands up her sides.

Andi

I think there’s something I need to clarify.

John

(without stopping his attentions)

And that is?

Andi

Despite what you might think, I’m not someone who is casual about sex.

John

I certainly don’t think that.

Andi

I know our arrangement sort of includes that element, but I don’t want you to feel that…

John

(when she’s paused a few seconds)

To feel what?

Andi

(takes a deep breath)

I don’t want you to feel obligated to, well to…

John

To?

Andi

Look, I imagine you wouldn’t do what you do if you didn’t have a reasonably healthy sexual appetite.

John

(smiling as he starts to untuck her tank top)

Makes sense.

Andi

I just don’t want you to feel that you have to pretend to be interested if you’re not. I really am looking for companionship, more than anything else. And I wouldn’t feel comfortable with false interest.

John stops trying to undress and entice her. He wraps his arms around her waist and holds her close for a second, burying his face in the side of her neck. After a couple of seconds he turns her around. He’s holding the side of her face, insuring she’s paying attention.

John

Listen to me. There is nothing obligatory about the way I’ve been trying to get you in this room for the last hour. If I didn’t want you, I wouldn’t be touching you the way I am. I know you’re a little shy about this. Truth be told, I’m a little nervous myself.

Andi

(surprised)

Really?

John

Yeah. This situation is a little unique for me.

Andi

Well yeah, I suppose that’s true. Even for your day to day, this is an unusual arrangement.

John

Right. So, let’s just stop worrying so much about each others expectations.

He kisses her deeply, pulling her closer. He guides her toward the side of the bed, and starts to pull up her tank top again. Andi pulls away.

Andi

Wait. The control for the blinds is on the other side of the bed.

John

(frustrated but patient)

So?

Andi

It’s just a little too bright in here.

John

Andi, I’m not going to make love to you in the dark, hidden under the covers, if that’s what you’re thinking.

Andi

I’m just a little self-conscious.

John

(smiles at her)

I can see that. Get over it.

John reaches for her and takes her tank off in a swift motion. He doesn’t pause, but immediately starts kissing her again, and then picks her up and sets her on the bed. He lies down beside her and keeps kissing her throat and chest.

Andi

(smiling)

Get over it? For the record, I wouldn’t advise a career in psychotherapy.

John

(stops and looks at her)

Maybe we should clarify something.

Andi

Ok.

John

This relationship…

Andi

(interrupts)

Relationship?

John

It might be a business relationship, primarily, but I still prefer relationship to ‘arrangement’.

Andi

Fair enough.

John

As I was saying, this relationship might be unusual, but it’s still designed to have the same components. What you asked me to be, essentially, is your boyfriend; someone to spend time with, someone to talk to. Correct?

Andi

(embarrassed)

Essentially, yes that is correct. And I just realized how pathetic it sounds.

John

Don’t. The more I get to know you, the more I’m getting a sense for why you made your offer. And I don’t see anything pathetic in it. However you acquired me, I intend to fulfill all the duties in my post.

Andi

How do you mean that?

John

I mean that a woman who has a boyfriend shouldn’t have to fall asleep, or wake up, alone. Should she?

Andi

(smiles)

I guess not.

John

This would be particularly odd if she and her boyfriend live together, true?

Andi

(rolls her eyes)

Yes.

John

And that is why I will be sleeping in this bed tonight. Now let me ask you something else.

Andi

Ok.

John

Do you want me?

Andi

Are you fricking kidding me?

John

(kisses her quickly)

No…be kind.

Andi

Well, ignoring the fact that you’re painfully gorgeous, you have eyes that should be classified a controlled substance, a voice that could melt icebergs, and of course a body that would make some women sit up and pant…

John

(burying his head in her neck)

Definitely a writer.

Andi

(laughing)

Ignoring all that, I have to stop myself from gasping every time you touch me.

John

(starts kissing her neck and she gasps)

Don’t do that.

Andi

I can’t help it.

John

I mean; (kisses her passionately and then pulls away to look her in the eye) don’t stop yourself.

Andi

(dodging another kiss)

Were you making a point?

John

Yes, I was. You’re a person who appreciates frankness, yes?

Andi

I am.

John

(interjecting quick kisses as he talks)

Then frankly, here’s the situation. I’m sleeping in this bed tonight. We can do that without making love, but given that I want you, and you want me, isn’t that just going to leave both of us unnecessarily frustrated?

Andi

(smiles at him and then runs her fingers down his arm)

Valid points.

John

Glad you agree.

He pulls his shirt off over his head and starts to kiss her again. They are making out heavily when he suddenly stops and hides his head against her abdomen.

John

Oh no.

Andi

(breathless)

What’s wrong?

John

Tell me you have condoms.

Andi

(giggling)

You didn’t bring any with you?

John

I…forgot.

Andi

How

(giggling)

unprofessional.

John

(looks up at her frustrated)

Not funny.

Andi

(kissing his nose)

They’re in the nightstand.

John reaches over and opens the drawer. He pulls out a box of condoms. He looks inside.

John

Hmm, only 4 left.

Andi

Oh come on, seriously?

John grabs one out of the box and tosses the box on the nightstand, then he leans down and kisses her.

John

I can probably make those last until morning.

He kisses her again, and they melt into each.

Dissolve to:

John and Andi are lying in bed. They are both on their backs, her head is on his chest, and they’re playing with each others hands, in a very satiated mood.

Andi

I’m hungry. We never did eat lunch, and it’s coming up on dinner.

John

kisses her hair)

I could eat.

Andi

Of course; that would require getting out of bed.

John

(wraps his arm tight around her shoulders)

Then I am against it. Can we ask someone to…

Andi

No. I generally don’t do that unless I’m sick. It’s a bad habit to get into.

John

I suppose it is. But we might just starve to death then.

Andi laughs and turns over to lay on his chest.

Andi

What a way to go.

John

(grinning)

We should go eat.

Andi

(sliding up and kissing him)

Suddenly my stomach doesn’t interest me as much.

There is a knock at the door. A woman, about the same age as Andi, cracks the door and talks in without being able to see the bed.

Jenna

Miss Andi?

Andi

Jenna. Don’t you start that Miss crap again. What’s up?

Jenna

I saw the lunch leftovers. You didn’t eat.

Andi rolls off of John, sits up in the bed and pulls the sheet up.

Andi

Jenna, stop hovering.

Jenna

I was told you have company.

Andi

Like that’s stopped you before. Come in.

Jenna gently kicks open the door. She is carrying a tray with their lunch on it, reheated.

Andi

Since when do you bring me food in bed?

Jenna sets the tray down on a table in the corner.

Jenna

Since I know you only had a few grapes at breakfast, and then I see you didn’t eat lunch.

Andi

We were going to come down in a minute.

Jenna walks over to the bed and holds her hand out to shake Johns.

Jenna

I’m Jenna.

John

(sits up and shakes her hand)

John.

Jenna

She’s supposed to eat every 4 hours during the day, at least. She’s also supposed to avoid a lot of dairy, and she’s not supposed to smoke. I understand you’re going to be here for a while. There’s more, but I can fill you in tomorrow.

Andi

Snitch!

John

Thank you Jenna.

(to Andi)

I would’ve expected you to tell me all of that, especially about needing to eat regularly.

Andi

(irritated)

Like I need another nursemaid. Jenna, toss me my robe please.

Jenna grabs a robe from inside the closet door and hands it to Andi. Andi looks pissy as she puts it on under the sheet and then gets out of bed. She walks into the closet. Jenna and John exchange curious looks as they hear her rummaging. She walks out of the closet carrying a pair of sweatpants. She tosses them to John. He looks at her questioningly.

Andi

There are still a few boxes of Mom and Dad’s clothes I have not had taken out.

Jenna looks down and John can tell she knows about the boxes and doesn’t like it. Andi walks over to the table and sits down. She’s huffy. Jenna walks over to serve her and Andi throws an exasperated look at her. She backs off. While her back is turned, John quickly puts on the sweatpants, gets up and walks over to the table. He grabs the arms of the chair Andi is in and turns her towards him. He kneels down and looks at her intently.

John

We’ve established that I am not your nurse. But that doesn’t mean you can ignore your health when I’m around.

(looks over his shoulder at Jenna)

I assume these orders are regarding the surgery.

Jenna

Yes.

John

Then I would appreciate a full rundown of everything she’s supposed to do, and everything she’s not.

Jenna

(smiles)

Absolutely.

John

(turning to Andi)

Compromise? I won’t act like your bossy, yet handsome, male nurse, if you don’t act like the adorable, but petulant, patient. Ok?

Andi

(amused)

Petulant?

John

(smiles at her and strokes her cheek)

Yes, petulant. Do we have a deal?

Andi

You know, there is one thing about you that drives me batty.

John

What’s that?

Andi

You are very hard to argue with.

John

(kisses her)

Is that a yes?

Andi

Ok, I’ll be a good girl.

John

Well, don’t go be too good.

John starts kissing Andi. Jenna clears her throat. John buries his head against Andi’s chest. Andi laugh and kisses the top of his head.

Andi

Jenna.

Jenna

Yes Miss.

Andi

Beat it.

Jenna laughs and John snickers against Andi.

Jenna

Yes Miss.

She curtseys, obviously to annoy Andi, and leaves. Andi lifts John’s head and kisses him. She starts to get up, trying to take him with her, but he breaks the kiss and pushes her into the chair.

John

Eat.

Andi

(tries to pull him back)

It’ll wait.

John kisses her back into the chair, then leaves her and quickly gets into the other chair.

John

No, eat.

Andi

Fine.

Andi she sticks her tongue out at him.

John

Ok, that I’ll do something about, as soon as we’re done eating.

They both laugh and eat.

Fade out:

int. andi’s bedroom; morning

John is lying in bed asleep. He reaches for Andi, but she’s not there. He rolls on his side as he wakes up and finds a letter pinned to a stuffed bunny.

CU:

Note “Off to work. Jeeps out front. Back at 1230. Appt. w/my masseuse. Tell Jenna if you’d like one too. XXOO

P.S. This...

(an arrow is drawn pointing up)

... is Chester, my first boyfriend. J

John

Well Chester, you’re out of luck my friend...

(gently rips off note and rolls on his back, holding the letter to his chest)

... she’s all mine.

John looks at the note again and then picks up Chester, holding him so he can ‘look’ at the paper.

John

See? Two X’s and two O’s.

John smiles and buries his head in Andi’s pillow.

Int. Andi’s kitchen.

John is sitting at the island eating a bowl of cereal. He is wearing the same clothes from the day before, but they appear to have been cleaned and pressed. His hair is still wet from the shower.

Jenna walks in. She pauses for a second, obviously not expecting him there.

Jenna

I just need to get a few supplies from the cabinet.

John

Ok, why are you telling me that?

Jenna

That’s staff speak for, “can I disturb you for a second to get something from this room?”

John

I see, well how about if you just stick with the translation, ok?

Jenna

(doesn’t leave the doorway)

Alright.

John

You’re still not entering the room. Is there some key word I’m supposed to give you or something?

Jenna

(embarrassed walks to the cupboard)

Sorry.

John

May I ask you a question Jenna?

Jenna

Of course.

John

What would Andi have to say if she’d heard that little conversation there?

Jenna

She would’ve told me to stop acting like a little prat and get my ass in the room.

John

(laughing)

Wow, I don’t think I expected quite that level of sarcasm.

Jenna

I’m not being sarcastic.

John

I know, I meant the sarcasm attributed to Andi.

Jenna

(smiles)

I take it you haven’t heard the snarks yet?

John

Snarks?

Jenna

She has a very sharp tongue. It can be dangerous at times, but it’s usually funny. She also has a few choice favorites; we call those her snarks.

John

I’m sure I’ll learn them soon enough. My point though, was this. Please don’t act in any way around me that you wouldn’t around her. Ok?

Jenna

(smiles)

Ok.

John

Did you see her this morning?

Jenna

Yes, we usually have breakfast together.

John

Did she tell you about... us.

Jenna

I got the gist. Plus, I suspected when Thomas first told us you were here.

John

She said the idea just occurred to her.

Jenna

Oh, she certainly never mentioned to me that it was on her mind. But I knew who she was meeting for lunch yesterday. Though I’m not so sure I buy it.

John

What do you mean?

Jenna

Somehow you don’t fit. You’re either an incredibly good actor, or you’re not a terribly good gigolo.

John

(not entirely hiding his surprise)

What do you mean?

Jenna

Never mind.

John

(pauses for a second)

Speaking of her cuteness, where is she?

Jenna

(giggling)

Really?

(when he gives her a look she says)

Check the computer. If you hit F1, it pulls up her agenda.

John

Ok, is there a computer downstairs? I’ll probably need a map.

Jenna

You’re kidding? She didn’t tell you about the computers?

John

No, what computers.

Jenna

She calls it another of her guilty pleasures. Frankly I think she needs to stow the guilt, but I suppose a liberal born with money doesn’t have a lot of choice there. There are terminals in most of the rooms of the house. Even guest bedrooms. They are all networked through a server in the basement. You can only get to the main system and the internet without a password, no folders or anything. I’ll call the company that handles the server and have them set up an account and email address for you. That way you can store things and setup your own contacts and calendar.

John

Wow, I’m not much of a computer person, but that was all very impressive sounding.

Jenna

I learned it all from Andi, and a cute tech who upgraded the server last year.

John

Oh yeah? How’d that work out?

Jenna

I decided one geek in my life is plenty.

John

I can appreciate that philosophy. So what’s the nearest room with a terminal then?

Jenna

(smiles and walks over to the island)

You weren’t paying attention.

Jenna pushes a button under the counter and a piece of the countertop raises a foot away from his cereal bowl. The section of counter top is on actually resting on a computer monitor which rises out of the cabinet.

John

Wow. I see what you mean now.

Jenna

She’s always writing something, and always thinking of something she wants to get down. But she hates writing by hand. She prefers to have a computer at hand. Plus, she says there’s no reason for us to miss out on a great thing on EBay because we don’t have computer access.

John

You’re kidding.

Jenna

Nope, she’s even gotten Thomas into MySpace.

John

(smiling affectionately as he hits F1 on the keyboard)

Man, she is a geek isn’t she?

Jenna

Yep, proud of it too.

(she sees John frowning)

Something wrong?

John

She’s wall to wall, for weeks.

(scrolling down the calendar)

Make that months, except for a few weeks that I’m guessing are around the surgery.

Jenna

(flustered)

Yeah, I know.

John

When does she have time to write, or think?

Jenna

That’s the idea.

John

What do you mean?

Jenna

I don’t think it’s my place…

John

Jenna, I don’t know how you feel about this situation, but the most important thing I want you to know is that I am here to take care of her. That’s what I signed on for. Do you believe me?

Jenna

(considers for a second)

I do.

John

Then I’d really appreciate a little help here. I already know she’s kept something from me, that I needed to know, once before.

Jenna

She’s right.

(John looks curious)

You are hard to argue with.

(John smiles)

Ok, ever heard of Steven Brinker?

John

I don’t think so; should I know the name?

Jenna

Not necessarily. Steven Brinker is the third son of a relatively wealthy international banker. He’s the latest in a line of bad men who’ve entered this house with dollar signs in their eyes, under the guise of giving a shit.

John

But if he has money?

Jenna

That’s what Andi thought. Hell, that’s what most of us thought. Turned out he was a bit of a bad seed. Daddy gave him a pile of dough and told him to hit the road. What he did was hit Monte Carlo and live it up. The pile started getting dangerously low, as you can imagine. Unfortunately, that’s when Andi met him.

John

(looks angry)

How far did it get?

Jenna

Well, the engagement hadn’t hit the papers yet, thankfully. But the whole town was a buzzing over them. They were about to announce, but Freddy put a stop to that. He may be a pencil pusher, but he cares about her. Instead of bringing up a pre-nup with Andi, because he knew she’d blow him off, he had a stroke of genius. He went to the Brinker family’s lawyers and suggested they setup the details then approach the couple together. The firm happily informed Freddy that they were not able to represent Steven as his family had cut off all financial support.

John

How’d she take it?

Jenna

(saddened)

She was holding up at first, but he managed to deal some devastating blows on his way out. Some of the things he said… and he did it in front of everyone. The whole staff heard them arguing.  He’d have done less damage if he’d have hit her.

John

(tears in his eyes)

I see.

Jenna

You do, don’t you.

(he nods)

There hasn’t been another man in this house since then. She hasn’t so much as gone on a date. So, you being here isn’t a surprise to me. Especially after seeing the way you talk to her.

John

How’s that?

Jenna

You get her. Not entirely, but you’re a lot closer than anyone has been, even way before Steven.

John

You’re like Andi right, you appreciate frankness.

Jenna

(smiling)

We do share that.

John

I’m going to take good care of her, whether she wants me to or not. Can I assume I have an ally?

Jenna

As long as I nothing happens to make me doubt that, yes. But if you hurt her, you’ll regret it.

John

You wouldn’t have to lift a finger to make that true. (hesitates) About this surgery...

jenna

She’s not lying, it’s not imminently serious. She’s had this awful acid reflux for a while. They’ve tried all kinds of meds and diet changes, and nothing works. The doctor said this surgery should take care of it.

john

So it’s pretty routine?

Jenna

Yes, but she still shouldn’t have put it off. She told the doctor she had to finish some projects first, and he agreed to postpone...reluctantly.

john

So, sooner would be better?

Jenna

Yes, but she agreed to only a few weeks delay, so I’m not pushing the point, as long as I don’t see it’s getting worse.

john

I should probably follow suit then, or I’m going to push her into a corner.

Jenna

(smiling)

You’re learning quickly. I’ve got to work to do. Let me know if you need anything, ok?

John

Will do, thank you. I’m going to run and get my things anyway, so I can have lunch with Andi when she gets back.

Jenna

The keys to the jeep are on the table by the front door.

John

Cool, thanks.

ext. john driving the jeep through the city

John is enjoying having the top open and is obviously fond of the whole vehicle. He pulls up in front of a brownstone, and goes inside.

int. apartment building hallway

John takes out a set of keys and let’s himself in.

int. peter’s apartment

Peter

(jumping up from the couch)

Where the hell have you been?

John

(startled)

Sorry Dad, did I miss curfew?

Peter

Don’t be an ass. You’ve been gone for 24 hours and your cell is off!

John pulls cell from his pocket and tries to turn it on.

john

(sheepishly)

Sorry, I guess it died.

Peter

Dude, you should’ve called. A little consideration, please?

John

Sorry man, really. I didn’t think about it. Truth be told, I’ve been doing very little thinking in the last...

(stunned)

... has it really been only 24 hours?

John sits on the couch, running his hands through his hair.

Peter

You ok, man?

John

That’s debatable. You’re never going to believe this.

Peter

What happened?

John

Ok, you know I went to meet that flaky gallery owner that Sandra’s friend gave my number to, right?

Peter

Yeah, the one who didn’t want to see your work because she prefers to, “get to know the artist instead of the art.”

John

Right. Well my service has been a little screwy lately.

Peter

I keep telling you, voicemail.

John

Yeah, I know. So my service says her name is Tanya Parks. But the woman who appears to be waiting for me, dressed expensively, isn’t Tanya Parks. She’s Alexandra Parks.

Peter

The heiress?

John You’ve heard of her?

Peter

Of course. I do work in PR; I have to keep up with the society pages.

John

Right.

Peter

I didn’t know she owned a gallery.

John

I don’t think she does.

(smiling)

Though I’ll bet she does a lot to support the arts.

Peter

I don’t understand.

John

She wasn’t actually waiting for me. She was waiting for another guy named John.

Peter

That must’ve been awkward. How’d she react?

John

I didn’t actually tell her.

Peter

(confused)

Huh?

John

Ok, pause. You cannot tell anyone what I’m about to tell you. No one. I shouldn’t be telling you, but…

Peter

(interrupts and talks him down)

I get it man, it’s important. Not a word.

John

(sighs)

Ok. This guy, that she was meeting is basically, well, he’s a…he’s a gigolo.

Peter

(pauses)

Alexandra Parks was meeting a gigolo for lunch at Charolais?

John

Yeah.

Peter

And you didn’t tell her you weren’t the…

John

No.

Peter

John. Tell me you didn’t sleep with her.

(John hesitates)

Are you insane?! She could destroy you!

John

Ok, overreacting a little, you think?

Peter

You really don’t know?

John

Know what?

Peter

John, Alexandra Parks might not have more money than God, but I’m pretty sure they’re in the same tax bracket.

John

Seriously?

Peter

Yes! Her father was old money, her mother was older money. But most people say she benefited a lot more from the fact her parents were hippies than a dollar of the money they left her. And that’s a lot of dollars.

John

I get it.

Peter

John, people like that, with that kind of money and history, have a lot of connections.

John

Explains the house.

Peter

Oh man, this is not good.

Peter starts pacing the room.

John

There’s more, actually.

Peter

I’m afraid to ask.

John

Well, we started off with small talk, and we really hit off. She iss very smart, and down to earth, and funny, and…

Peter

(interrupts)

Oh hell. You fell for her.

John

(smiles wistfully)

Like a brick, my friend.

Peter

Then why didn’t you tell her the truth?

John

Ok, so like I said, we really hit it off. I didn’t realize right away, ok, I mean, I didn’t even really get that there was a mix up until she started to ask me.

Peter

To ask you what?

John

Ok, I have to tell you the why’s first.

Peter

What?

John

If I don’t explain her reasons first, this is going to sound bad.

Peter

Whatever, just get on with it.

John

She’s been having a rough time lately. The last boyfriend she had, I guess he really messed with her head.

Peter

Steven Brinker?

John

You really do know a lot about her.

Peter

There was a lot of buzz about that. Everyone expected a wedding, but then suddenly, it was over. And no one had a clue why.

John

Well, let’s just say it wasn’t her that he wanted, but what she has. Fucking idiot.

Peter

That was a popular theory, including him being an idiot.

John

Then there’s this surgery she’s having in a few weeks. I haven’t gotten all the information on it yet, and it sounds routine, but it’s still got her nervous.

Peter

I didn’t know about that. Ok, do I have all the why’s?

John

All the ones I have at the moment.

Peter

So?

John

She asked me... ok, thinking I was this other guy, she asked me...

Peter

Spit it out!

John

(quickly blurts out)

She hired me to be her live-in boyfriend for the next six months.

Peter

(pauses)

Am I being punked, because I will beat you?

John

I’m serious.

Peter

Are you shitting me? Why the hell would Alexandra Parks need to...?

John

She doesn’t want to be alone right now. She wants someone to talk to, to spend time with. She wants... someone to count on. I don’t think she trusts herself anymore. She’s afraid that the next guy will play her too, and she’ll have to go through the same shit she did with the idiot, plus the surgery, and she’ll be alone again.

Peter

(understanding)

So instead, her friend sets her up for lunch with a gigolo. And when she meets him, she likes him, and he certainly seems to like her. And if she’s paying him to be there for her, at least she knows what to expect?

John

(sad)

Yeah.

Peter

(sits down in an opposite seat)

You’re out of your mind.

John

What was I supposed to do?!

Peter

You should’ve told her the truth, told her you liked her, asked her out!

John

I couldn’t do that.

Peter

Why the hell not?

John

She would’ve left!

(more calmly but he jumps up and paces agitatedly)

Why would she trust me? A poor painter, bumming his buddy’s couch, working as a waiter; I’d have looked like just another opportunistic jerk. Plus, she was already so mortified when she stopped and realize just what she’d proposed. I half expected her to bolt from the restraurant then. And if she’d walked out…

John suddenly stops pacing and looks Peter dead in the face.

Peter

What?

John

She’d have been alone. I couldn’t let her be alone. I just couldn’t.

Peter

Ok, I get it. I do. But answer this. What happens in six months?

John

I tell her everything and hope.

Peter

And if she doesn’t take it well? She could make sure you never get a break in this city, or anywhere else. And that’s if she doesn’t sue you for fraud.

John

She wouldn’t do that?

Peter

Why not.

John

Because she’s on first name basis with most of the staff at Charolais. Because she knew the driver from the car service has kids, and she knows their names and after school activities. Because she gives relationship advice to her lawyer’s receptionist, and practically begged to get an invitation to the wedding. Because she gets irritated that her butler insists on calling her Miss Andi, instead of just Andi, and he refuses to do his job without a jacket on. And because she has breakfast with her housekeeper every morning, who she treats more like a sister than an employee.

Peter

(smiling)

I heard she was eccentric.

John

She’s not…well maybe a little. But that’s not what it is. She cares about…everyone. She wouldn’t hurt me out of spite. It’s not in her.

Peter

(serious)

Maybe you’re right. She’d have to be pretty extraordinary to hit you so hard and fast. But that doesn’t mean this is going to end well. I know what you’re hoping for John.

John

What do you mean?

Peter

I’ve known you since 7th grade man, I have a pretty good idea what’s in your head. In six months you’ll confess. You’ll tell her you’re madly in love with her, and that you have been since day one, because we both know it’s true.

(John smiles)

And you’ll beg her to marry you, and poof, happily ever after. But all she’ll hear is that another man has lied to her, and pretended to be something he’s not, and he got paid for it.

John

That’s a risk I have to take.

Peter

Why? Why can’t you confess now? Tell her all your why’s. See what she says.

John

I told you, I can’t let her be alone. Not now. She needs someone, and if I tell her the truth, and she panics, she won’t have anyone. I can’t let that happen.

Peter

(stands, sighing resignedly)

Well, you better tell her that too, in six months. Need a hand with your stuff?

John

(smiles)

Thanks man.

ext. the street outside peter’s apartment building

John and Peter are putting the last couple of boxes in the jeep.

Peter

So, are you going to leave the rest of your paintings in storage?

John

Yeah, I don’t want to take up a lot of space.

Peter

That’s all of it then.

John

Thanks for everything Pete, especially for letting me crash here after Cindy and I split.

Peter and John exchange a ‘guy hug’.

Peter

No problem. I hope you don’t need it, but the couch will still be here in six months.

John

Cross your fingers for me.

Peter

I really will. I better end up best man though, if you get the girl.

John

Of course you will be, when I get the girl.

Peter

Keep thinking positive.

(John gets in the jeep)

Nice wheels by the way.

John

My girl may be loaded, but she also has good taste.

John winks at Peter, who laughs, then he puts on his sunglasses. They exchange brief waves and John drives away.

ext. andi’s driveway

John pulls up in front of the house. He grabs a couple of boxes as Thomas walks out.

John

Good morning Thomas.

Thomas

Good morning sir. I can have your things brought in.

John

It’s not necessary.

Thomas

I insist sir.

John

Ok, thanks.

John and Thomas walk into the house together.

int. main hall

Thomas

(nods toward the kitchen door)

Jenna left a note in the kitchen with your computer network access information. And Miss Andi called.

John

(perking up)

She did?

Thomas

Yes. She had her cellular company send a phone for you. She said to tell you that if the model she picked out isn’t acceptable, you should let her know and she can have a different one ordered.

John

I’m sure it’ll be fine. I guess it doesn’t make sense to have my old one right now.

Thomas

Miss Andi also said that they haven’t actually assigned you a phone number yet, because she thought you’d prefer to have your current number used. She left instructions for contacting them and letting them know if you’d prefer that.

John

(smiling)

Thoughtful.

int. kitchen

John walks into the kitchen and puts the boxes he was carrying on the counter. He sees the cell phone on the counter and picks it up.

John

If it isn’t acceptable? This thing looks like a mini-computer. It must’ve cost a fortune.

Thomas

Miss Andi is found of technology, as I believe Jenna told you this morning. But she is also a smart shopper. She buys the best, not the most expensive looking. But if it costs a little bit more, she just says she’s helping to advance good products.

John

Sounds like her. Speaking of which, I imagine Jenna told you the bulk of our conversation earlier?

Thomas

(showing no reaction)

She did.

John

I assume you have no issue then, with my asking Jenna to keep me informed of things I should know about Andi, particularly in view of Andi keeping her dietary needs to herself.

Thomas

(bows his head slightly)

I should’ve checked the food containers. It was fortunate Jenna thought of it.

(pulls his head back up)

It’s not my place to comment sir. Generally I do not approve of such familiarity between household staff and their employers. I do not think it is appropriate. But Miss Andi and Jenna practically grew up together, so it’s understandable that they are close, and that Jenna would be glad of another ally in getting Miss Andi to take better care of herself.

John

They grew up together?

Thomas

Jenna’s mother, Elizabeth, was the housekeeper for Miss Andi’s parents. Jenna was here a great deal as a child. Mrs. Parks encouraged their friendship.

John

That explains a lot.

Thomas

I imagine it would.

John

I understand your position Thomas, but I would appreciate an answer to one question.

Thomas

Of course.

John

Do you have any objection to my presence here?

Thomas

Sir, this is Miss Andi’s house. Whom she invites to stay, and with whom she chooses to spend her time, is her business. That said, as long as I continue to believe you have her best interests at heart, you’ll encounter no problems with myself or anyone else here.

John

(smiling)

Thank you Thomas, that’s very good news.

(looks at his watch)

It’s  almost 12. Thomas, could you have the two suitcases in the front seat brought up to the master bedroom first. I want to get cleaned up and change before Andi gets home.

Thomas

I will see to it immediately, sir.

John

(heading for the door, but he turns around)

I don’t suppose there’s anyway I’ll get you to call me John?

Thomas

(with a very small grin)

No sir.

John is smiling as he leaves the room.

int. main hall

John is wearing fresh clothes and is sitting about halfway up the staircase. He keeps checking his watch. Through a doorway, a masseuse can be seen setting up a table in the Light room. Andi comes in the door in a hurry, John stands up and smiles. She sticks her head into the Light room.

Andi

I’m so sorry I’m late Ben. Let me run up and change and I’ll be right with you.

Ben

(smiling)

No problem Andi, you’re barely late.

Andi

Thanks.

Andi runs toward the stairs. She stops next to John, smiling.

Andi

Hey, sorry, I don’t want to keep Ben waiting.

Andi runs up the stairs. John looks irritated. After a few seconds he follows her.

int. andi’s bedroom.

When John comes into the bedroom, Andi is already out of her blouse. She walks toward the closet, but he blocks her path.

Andi

John, I have to get my robe.

John

Can I talk to you for a second?

Andi

Ben is waiting, can it wait for a little while.

John

Not really, no.

Andi

(looking worried, she walks over and sits on the bed)

What’s wrong?

John

(pacing and obviously a little agitated)

For starters, what was that on the stairs?

Andi

(confused)

What?

John

You come in, you barely say hello, and you rush off?

Andi

I told you, I didn’t want to keep Ben waiting.

John

No offense to Ben, I’m sure he’s a great guy, but shouldn’t you be a little more concerned with your boyfriend’s feelings than upsetting your masseuse?

Andi smiles, then she stands up and walks toward him. She slides her arms around his neck, presses her body to his, and gives him a slow deep kiss. After a few seconds, she pulls back to look in his eyes.

Andi

Better?

John

(rests his forehead on hers for a second)

Much.

(looks in her eyes)

Now, about your schedule.

Andi

(confused)

My schedule?

John

Yes, it’s ridiculously full. How exactly are we going to spend any time together when you’re booked solid?

Andi

(smiles and tucks her head under his chin)

If I kiss you again, can we talk about this in 45 minutes? I really don’t want to make Ben wait. He’ll stay for the full time, no matter what, and then the rest of his day is all screwed up.

John

(tilts her chin up, he’s frowning)

You have a meeting in midtown at 2:30.

Andi

(smiling)

Fortunately, that was rescheduled this morning. I’m free for the rest of the day.

John

(smiles)

Really?

Andi

Yep.

John

Ok.

(he kisses her deeply)

I’ll wait.

She smiles, and slips from his arms to go to the closet. She comes out a few seconds later, apparently wearing only the robe. She heads for the bedroom door, but suddenly stops. She runs back, kisses John on the cheek, and then bolts from the room. John smiles victoriously, and throws himself back onto the bed.

Int. Light Room.

John walks in as Andi is sitting up wrapping a sheet around her. Ben is putting his things away. Neither of them sees John.

Andi

Thank you Ben, I feel so much better.

Ben

Well you needed it. How did you get so knotted up since Saturday?

Andi

Too long a story.

Ben

I see. Well remember; take it easy on that shoulder the rest of the day.

Andi

Will do. Do you wanna stick around for lunch?

John

(clears his throat to get their attention)

I’ve actually arranged lunch on the patio.

Ben

That’s ok. I have another client in an hour.

Andi

(shyly)

Were you waiting for me?

John

(small smile)

Yes.

Andi

(breathless)

I have to get dressed.

John

(quietly)

If you insist.

Andi blushes and looks to see if Ben heard. It doesn’t appear that he did. She turns back to John.

Andi

 Give me 15 minutes.

John

(runs a finger along her cheek and over her lips)

Make it 10.

Andi

(winks at him and turns to Ben)

Thanks so much Ben. I’m sorry about being late.

Ben

No problem. See you Saturday.

Andi

Bye.

Andi quickly leaves the room. Ben finishes packing his things and puts the table in a closet. He walks over to John and shakes his hand.

Ben

Nice meeting you.

John

You too.

Ben starts to leave but turns back after a few steps.

Ben

(hesitates then says definitively)

Good luck, my friend.

John

(smiles)

Thank you.

Ben leaves. John walks through the house and out a door off of a large open room.

ext. patio

A pretty wrought iron table is laid out with nice dishes. There is a large covered tray in the center of the table. John sits down to wait. Andi comes out in a rush, like she ran. She is dressed in shorts, a tank, and a short sleeve shirt. She has put her hair up with a clip, but it’s loosely done, so there are small sections hanging.

Smiling, John gets up and pulls out a chair for her. He pushes the chair in a little as she sits, and then leans in close and kisses the side of her neck.

Andi

(shivers)

Thank you. This looks lovely. I usually just have a sandwich in the kitchen.

John

Well, since I have you all to myself, I tried to think of what would be the perfect lunch, and then I had an inspiration.

John lifts the cover from the tray and reveals hoagies and bags of chips. Andi laughs.

Andi

That is inspired.

John

Thank you.

Andi

(she leans in close)

It’s perfect.

She kisses him softly, but the kiss carries on for several seconds. Then she leans back and takes a sandwich.

John

Well, this lunch already turned out better than I’d hoped.

Andi

How so?

John

You’re first PDA; with me at least.

Andi

(blushing)

I don’t know how public this is. Our back patio, and not even a one of the staff is around?

John

Our patio?

Andi

(flustered)

Well, you do live here. I mean, if you had a roommate and you were referring to the place you lived you might say, “our house,” right?

John

(smiles)

I’d say so.

John grabs a sandwich and a bag of chips. They chat while they eat.

John

Don’t masseuses usually bring their own table?

Andi

Yes, but I didn’t see any reason for him to lug a table in all the time. Plus, I have a terrific one. Fantastic memory foam. The thing really makes you feel like your floating. I’ve been thinking about asking them to make me a mattress, but I can’t decide if it’s a good idea.

John

I would think that would be an easy one.

Andi

I thought so too, until I really went over it. See my problem is this. Yes, feeling suspended in air while asleep seems ideally comfortable. But, if you woke up and felt like you were floating, wouldn’t you react badly? I mean, the feeling of the bed supporting you is part of what makes sleeping good. You feel protected, cosseted.

John

(considers for a second)

Yeah, I see your point. It is a tricky idea. But maybe it’s something you’d have to try for a little while and see if you can adjust. Maybe that feeling of floating, once your body got used to it, would feel secure as well. Maybe it’s just a trick you have to get your mind around.

Andi

Hmm, I hadn’t thought of that. Well, what do you think we should do?

John

We?

Andi

Well, we do both sleep in it. It would be very insensitive of me to get a completely different kind of mattress, and not talk to you about it first.

John

I guess it would be. Frankly, I’m game. I always wondered what making love while floating would feel like. (smirks at her)

Andi

(blushing)

I hadn’t thought of that.

John

(pouts)

I think you hurt my feelings.

Andi

(grinning)

What?

John

Well apparently I didn’t do enough to make an impression last night…or early this morning. Because if I did, every other thought on your mind should be sex.

Andi

(grinning)

Well if one good sexual thought takes 20 minutes...

John

(quizzically)

Huh?

Andi

Sorry, it’s from a movie.

John

Yeah, I took a little closer look in, what I’m guessing is called, the Movie Room this afternoon.

Andi

Actually, I call it the Screening Room. A little corny, I know, but it does have an actual screen and a 35mm camera.

John

I didn’t see those, but the DVD collection is... I’m not sure what to call it.

Andi

Extensive, or insane. Those are the most common words I hear.

John

Insane might be a little much but, wow, there are a lot of movies in there.

Andi

Yeah.

John

And why is there so much VHS?

Andi

Anything I have VHS is either not on DVD, or the video has sentimental value. The film reels are in the closet by the TV.

John

Can that thing actually be called a TV?

Andi

It’s not that big. I know people who have bigger, but it starts to seem excessive and take you out of the experience.

John

So it is safe to call you a film nut?

Andi

Well, they say you can tell a lot about a person by how they spend their money. I give a sizeable endowment to a few film preservation groups; I give out several grants a year to independent film projects. I also do a little lecturing on film history at the New School.

John

So, nut?

Andi

(grinning hesitantly)

Yeah. Ready to run from the house in fear?

John

Excuse me.

John gets up and rearranges the food so it’s all on his side of the table. Andi looks like she wants to ask what he’s doing, but she doesn’t. When he’s rearranged the table, he moves his chair out of the way. He walks over and picks up small bench at another table on the patio, and he puts it where his chair was. Then he goes to Andi, picks her up, and sits her down on the bench. He straddles the bench next to her, and pulls her legs over one of his.

John

There.

(he slides one hand up into her hair)

That’s better.

John pulls her close and kisses her tenderly.

John

You are passionate by nature. Not just about movies, but about a lot of things. Your calendar alone shows that. Your passion is intoxicating.

Andi slips her arms around his neck and pulls him in to kiss him. They make out for a few minutes. Finally John pulls away.

John

And speaking of your calendar.

Andi

(looks apologetic)

It is a little heavy at the moment.

John

Do you realize that I couldn’t get an hour alone with you, before 7PM, any weekday in the next two months?

Andi

Wow, really?

John

I don’t know how you haven’t passed out from exhaustion yet.

Andi

I have a lot of stamina.

John

(grinning)

I know.

(Andi blushes)

So, how do we deal with this?

Andi

I can trim it back some.

John

Can you trim it back a lot?

Andi

How much are we talking about?

John

Would half be out of the question?

Andi

(surprised)

Half?

John

Yes.

Andi

I don’t mean to be presumptuous but, aren’t you going to want to hang out with friends or anything? I mean, you have other things to occupy your time, obviously.

John

I could do all the occupying I need with you keeping half of your currently schedule.

Andi

Ok, that’s going to take a little work. I probably won’t be able to cut too much until the end of the week.

John

(beaming)

That’s ok. I can cope for a week, as long as the week after I’ll get to spend a lot more time with you.

Andi

(blushing)

Are you sure you want me to do this?

John

Why wouldn’t I?

Andi

I just don’t...

John

What is it?

Andi

I know that, technically, you’re just doing what I asked you to do. But I... look, about before, in the bedroom.

John

Yes.

Andi

I mean, if you’re just very dedicated to doing your job well, I appreciate that, I really do. But I don’t want you to think you have to spend every minute with me, and I don’t want you to put on a show of wanting my time or attention.

John

How can I make this clearer to you? I’m not putting on a show.

Andi

It’s not that there’s anything disingenuous in the way you act, I just really can’t see why...

John

Why I’m being pissy about not having enough time with you?

Andi

Well, I don’t think I would’ve used the word pissy, but frankly, yes.

John

Would you even believe it’s just what I want?

Andi

I don’t see why.

John

Andi, why did you ask me to do this?

Andi

What do you mean?

John

I mean, why did you ask me? Obviously, even when the idea occurred to you, you didn’t have to choose me. But you did. Why?

Andi

I don’t know exactly. You were easy to talk to, I felt like we could have some great conversations. And you seemed to enjoy my company too.

John

I did, I do. So why can’t you believe that now?

Andi

It’s not that I don’t believe it, I just don’t want you to think...

John

Stop worrying about me thinking I have to do anything at all. I don’t do things out of necessity if I can avoid it. If I didn’t want to be here, if I didn’t want to be with you, I wouldn’t have agreed to this.

Andi

So you genuinely... like me?

John

(exasperated)

Yes!

Andi

(blushing)

Ok. I know I’ve spread myself thin lately. I can assign some projects and move some obligations around. You’re not the first person to say I’m doing too much myself.

John

I’m sure I’m not.

Andi

I just didn’t much like spending time alone for a while.

John

I understand...

(he kisses her softly)

... but you’re not alone anymore.

Andi

No, I guess I’m not.

They finish eating while cuddling and flirting.

Dissolve to:

int. Andi’s bedroom, late afternoon

Andi and John are cuddling in bed after making love. The light is still fairly bright, but the sun is going down. Her head is on his chest and his arms are wrapped tightly around her.

John

Speaking of your schedule.

Andi

Were we?

John

Well, that’s the last conversation we had that didn’t involved a lot of moaning.

Andi

(blushes)

True.

John

Man, they should put your face on those calendars with like the giant puppy and kitten faces.

(laughs)

So, do you ever take vacations?

Andi

Of course.

John

When was your last?

Andi

Well, I went to Naples for a film festival last month.

John

Strictly for fun?

Andi

Well, one of the films I backed was showing and they were having issues with distribution, so I said I’d talk to a few people…

John

(interrupts)

So, not strictly for fun.

Andi

Not strictly, but I had a good time.

John

I think you need one.

Andi

(reaches back and plays with his neck)

I seem to be having plenty of good times lately.

John

(tickles her)

I mean, you need a vacation.

Andi

I suppose, it’s a nice idea, but that would be difficult.

John

(kisses her hair)

How difficult?

Andi

How soon were you thinking?

John

Not right now. Maybe, as soon as you’re feeling up to it, after the surgery?

Andi tenses a little at the mention of the surgery. He plays with her hair and nibbles on her ear to ease her.

Andi

I’m already taking a month off from everything.

John

So, what’s a couple more weeks?

Andi

I don’t know.

John

I think it would be good for you, and I’d love to drag you around some place like a tourist. Imagine just you and me, nobody who has any idea who we are. The people around us will just see a cute couple wandering aimlessly and sneaking off to make out a lot.

Andi

(smiles)

I’ll think about it.

John

That sounds like a brush off.

Andi

It’s not. I just don’t know if I can rearrange my calendar enough to pull it off.

John

(kisses her hair again)

Can I do anything to help?

Andi

(not sure what he means)

Not that I can think of, but I’ll keep it in mind.

John

Ok, let me rephrase. What can I do to talk you into trying really hard?

He slides down and starts kiss her neck. As he starts to move lower, to her upper chest, he can’t see that she’s bothered.

Andi

John.

She tries to pull him off but he doesn’t realize she’s doing it. He’s very intent on her. She’s getting more and more upset.

Andi

(quietly)

John stop.

(he doesn’t notice)

John, stop!

He realizes what she’s saying and he pulls away in surprise. He has a worried expression on his face.

John

What’s wrong?

Andi

I just need some air.

He let’s her get up, almost falling off the bed. She crawls over to the other side of the bed. She gets up and grabs her robe. She puts it on as she walks out the double doors onto the terrace. John slowly puts on his underwear and pants. He follows her outside. She is sitting at a small table, not visible from the doorway. She is smoking a cigarette. She holds it up.

Andi

No lectures, please.

John

We’ll talk about that later. What’s wrong?

She is silent, like she can’t think of anything to say. He crouches in front of her, putting his hands on her knees.

John

Andi, what’s wrong? Talk to me.

Andi

Don’t do that, ok?

John

Do what?

Andi

Use sex as an... enticement.

John

What?! I was being affectionate and playful. I wasn’t trying to get my way by giving you some action.

Andi

(laughs dryly)

Interesting choice of words.

John

What is it? Why would you think that?

Andi

I don’t want to talk about it. I’m sorry I assumed...

John

Is that something Steven did?

Andi

How do you know about Steven?!

John

Would he try to seduce things he wanted from you?

Andi

How do you…

John

That’s not important right now.

Andi

(pissed)

Fuck you!

John

(shocked)

What?

Andi

I don’t need you to tell me what’s important.

John

Andi, stop this. I will not fight with you.

Andi

Of course not. Men are only willing to fight when they want to. If you’re in the mood, tough shit. You can just sit there and piss a fit like a fucking harpie, or you can stew quietly.

She tries to get up but he gently pushes her back in the chair.

John

Sweetheart, please don’t do this.

Andi

I am not your…

John

Listen to me. I will sit here and take every hit that little prick deserves. I will. But only if it’s going to make you feel better. And something tells me that it won’t.

She looks out at the grounds.

John

Look at me, please.

Andi

(without turning to him)

I’m sorry.

John

Don’t be sorry, just look at me.

Andi

This was a mistake. I’m not ready. I thought, this wasn’t going to be the same, so I’d be ok. But I’m not, I just can’t…

John

Alright, that’s it!

John grabs the cigarette from her hand and puts it out in a flower pot. She’s so stunned that it takes her a second to object. Before she can, he pulls her to her feet. Then he throws her over his shoulder and carries her back inside. He throws her on the bed and sits down. He grabs her when she tries to get up, and she’s fighting him a little. He holds her tenderly in his arms and strokes her back until she stops fighting him entirely.

Andi

(angrily but calmer)

Please let me go.

John

No.

John kisses her shoulder and sighs.

Andi

John, please.

John grabs her shoulders and pulls her away from him. He looks her in the eye.

John

That’s right, John. I am not the nimrod.

Andi

(trying not to smile)

Nimrod?

John

I’m not him. I would never treat you the way he did. If you need to vent, I can take it, but I won’t stop touching you because of something he did. And I will call you sweetheart, baby, darling or sugar lips if I damn well please. And I will not let you send me away because you’re still hurting. I made a promise, and I’m going to keep it.

Andi

(strokes his cheek and he sighs)

I’m sorry.

John

Stop saying that. You don’t have to apologize to me.

Andi

How about I try not to get angry at you for something you didn’t do. And you will let me say I’m sorry, if I feel it. Deal?

John

(smiles)

Deal.

He pulls her closer and she curls up against him.

John

About earlier, what started all of this. I promise you, I wasn’t trying to...

Andi

I know. I knew when you said it. It just, a de ja vu that was less than pleasant.

John

Do you want to talk about it?

Andi

Honestly, I don’t. I know that probably feels like I’m withholding or something, but I just don’t feel like it.

John

That’s ok. Just so you know you can, when you do feel like it.

Andi

I know. As to the vacation idea in general.

John

We don’t have to talk about it right now.

Andi

I’ll have Ted start working on it first thing tomorrow. I promise, if it’s remotely possible, we’ll do it.

John

(smiling)

Thank you.

He kisses her softly. She moves to deepen the kiss but he pulls back.

Andi

Get back here.

John

It’s almost 7.

Andi

Thank you for that information. Now get back here.

John

(laughing, he kisses her quickly)

Dinner.

Andi

I’m not hungry.

She quickly moves in starts kissing his neck. His breath catches and he seems unable to stop her. She moves down his chest some and then the phone on the nightstand rings. Andi buries her head against his chest and gives a mild shriek of frustration. He laughs.

John

Saved by the bell.

Andi

(she flips her hair back as she lookups up at him)

Temporary reprieve at best. And if you push me, I won’t answer it.

Andi grins mischievously, and crawls over him and to answer the phone. He lies behind her and is teasing her a little while she talks. We only hear her side of the conversation.

Andi

Yes?

(beat)

Shut up Jenna.

(beat)

What do you want?

(beat)

Yes, I know what time it is.

(beat)

We were coming down shortly.

(gasps from John touching kissing her back)

Nothing.

(pause)

Am not.

(pause)

Blow me.

John immediately buries his head in a pillow and starts laughing.

Andi

He’s laughing.

(beat)

I don’t know why.

(beat)

Of course I didn’t.

(beat)

No he has not.

(beat)

Get off it.

(beat)

I‘ll keel haul you.

(beat)

I’ll build one.

(beat)

Then I’ll build one of those too.

(beat)

Ok, ok, pain in my ass. We’ll be right down.

(beat)

Yes, he’s still laughing.

(beat)

I don’t know, ask him in a minute. Hang on.

Andi

(turns to John)

Oh sugar lips.

John breaks into a gale.

John

(from in the pillow)

Yes?

Andi

Mind if we watch a movie while we eat?

John

(still in pillow, straining to stop laughing enough to talk)

That’s fine.

Andi

(into phone)

Would you have it set up in the Screening Room.

(beat)

No, I’ll pick something out when we get downstairs.

(pause)

Thank you

(looking at John)

And we don’t have any loose nitrous tanks floating around do we?

John starts laughing again.

Andi

(smiling)

Never mind. See you in a couple minutes.

Andi hangs up the phone. She turns over and waits for him to calm down. He finally pulls his head out of the pillow.

Andi

What was that all about?

John

Introduction to Andi Speak, 101.

Andi

What?

John

Nothing, you are just too damned cute.

John rolls onto his back, pulling her on top of him. He kisses her. She starts kissing his neck and body again.

John

(moaning)

We have to go downstairs.

Andi

(muffled against his throat)

In a minute.

John

(moaning)

Baby, please.

Andi

(sits up)

Hmm, I kinda like that one.

John

(he grabs her and kisses her)

You’re killing me. Please, let’s go downstairs before I lose what control I have left.

Andi

(smiling)

How much is that exactly?

She moves back to his neck. John quickly rolls her over again, but as he does he plants his knee in the mattress and bounds out of the bed.

Andi

Nice. 9.0. The French judges were impressed.

John

Pardon moi, mademoiselle.

John bows. He doesn’t see her sit up on the bed so he’s standing between her legs. She kisses his stomach as he comes up. He throws his head back and moans again. After a couple of seconds he jumps back out of reach. She’s pouting.

Andi

No fun.

John

Food first.

Andi

(grins)

I was just trying to work up an appetite.

John quickly starts gathering clothes that are strewn around the bed. When he bends over at one point she whistles.

John

(feigning a pout)

Stop objectifying me and get dressed.

He tosses her clothes at her.

Andi

Sorry sweet cheeks.

She gets up and starts dressing. He slaps her playfully on the ass as he walks into the bathroom.

int. screening room

When Andi and John walk in, they find a nice dinner laid out on a table in front of the main sofa, which faces the TV.  Jenna is lighting a couple candles on a table in the corner. She has lit a few others around the room.

John

Nice.

Jenna

(startled)

Oh, hi.

Andi

Seriously, this is lovely. Thanks hun.

Jenna

You’re welcome. I figure if I try to make it interesting you’ll stop arguing with me and get your ass downstairs when I say it’s time for dinner.

Andi

(walks over to look at the spread)

I guarantee you, there is nothing that interesting in this room or on these trays.

John

(winks at her)

Behave.

Jenna

(smiling at the look they share, before disrupting it)

So, what was with the laugh track?

John

(laughing a little)

I heard my first snark, I think.

Andi turns quickly to Jenna, irritated but not overly.

Andi

What did he say?

Jenna

(ignoring her)

Which one was it?

John

Blow me.

Jenna

Ah yes, a classic.

Andi

You suck!

Jenna

Another favorite.

Andi

I can’t believe you told him about the snarks. What is your damage Heather?

Jenna

(amused outrage)

Veronica, why are you pulling my dick?

Andi

(high fives her)

Nice one.

John

(shaking his heads)

I need more lessons.

Jenna

Huh?

John

Never mind.

John moves to the couch and so does Andi. As Jenna is going out and starting to close the door she stops.

Jenna

Should I lock this, or...

Andi narrows her eyes at her. John just snickers again. Jenna grins at them and closes the door. John is trying not to start laughing again. Andi gets up and walks to the movie wall. The movie collection is on 6” high bookcases that are on almost every free space of wall. There are movie posters hung above most of the bookcases. There are some from almost every decade of film.

Andi

So, I’m thinking something funny. You game?

John

Sure, what did you have in mind?

Andi

Mel Brooks?

John

Nah, not in that mood.

Andi

Albert Brooks?

John

Hard to watch when you’re eating. You always feel like you missed something when you look away.

Andi

Good point. Hmm, maybe something older. Ooh, did you ever see The Mating Game?

John

No. It’s nothing like The Crying Game is it?

Andi

(laughs)

No. 1965. Debbie Reynolds and Tony Randall. Very funny and light.

John

Sounds good.

Andi walks to a wall of VHS tapes and finds the movie. She opens a cabinet next to the TV and there is a mass of machines; HD DVD, Blue Ray, VHS and even Laser Disk. There is also a cable box, a DVR, and a nice stereo.

John

By the way, I forgot to ask you. Who’s Ted?

Andi

Oh, I forgot you haven’t met him yet. He’s my assistant.

John

You have an assistant?

Andi

Of course, how on earth would I exist without one? I really would pass out from exhaustion.

John

Good point. So it’s a guy?

Andi

(sits down next to him)

Ted is traditionally a guys name.

John

Just clarifying. How old is he?

Andi

He’s 24.

John

Really? That’s young.

Andi

I usually get them fresh out of college. After a couple years with me they make enough contacts to start doing what they really want to do. It’s a little tedious, breaking in new assistants all the time. But I have gotten some young people into some opportunities they wouldn’t have otherwise had.

John

So, you have a 24 year old assistant, barely out of college?

Andi

(grinning at him)

Yes, now ask me the last question.

John

What question?

Andi

Is he good looking?

John

I wasn’t going to ask that.

(she kisses him)

But since you mentioned it.

Andi

(laughing)

I’m not going to lie to you, he is.

John

(looks irritated, but then brightens)

Any chance he’s gay?

Andi

(laughing harder)

No, he’s not gay.

John

Are you sure?

Andi

Yes, I’m sure.

John

How sure?

Andi

Are you asking me if I’ve slept with him?

John

No, but since you mentioned it.

Andi

Oh my god, you are adorable. He’s been on dates, I’ve met some girlfriends, and he did hit on me once.

John

(looks really unhappy)

So how long do I have to be here before I’m allowed to ask you to fire someone?

Andi

(slaps his arm)

Behave. He’s cute, and he’s young, but he has nothing on you. Besides, I wouldn’t do something like that with someone who worked for me.

(John gives her a look and she slaps his arm again)

You know what I mean.

John kisses her. They make out for a little while then he insists they turn on the movie and eat.

Int. bedroom, morning.

John is waking and reaches out to find himself alone again. He growls in frustration and throws his arm over his eyes. Andi walks out of the bathroom door, with eye shadow in hand.

Andi

Well, good morning to you too sunshine.

John

(throws his hand off and smiles)

I thought you were gone.

Andi

(smiles and continues talking, elevated, as she goes back in the bathroom)

Nope. I’m running a bit late though. I was trying not to wake you.

John gets out of bed and follows her into the bathroom.

Int. bathroom

Andi is putting on the last of her make-up. He slips his hands around her waist and pulls her close.

John

(kissing her neck)

I’d rather you’d woken me up an hour ago.

Andi

(grinning at him in the mirror)

You woke me up 4 hours ago. I do need some sleep.

John

Really? I thought that was a dream. A really

(kisses her shoulder)

... really...

(kisses her other shoulder)

... good dream.

Andi

(blushing)

Down boy. I have to be in the city at 10.

John

(pouts and sighs)

Ok. Are you coming home for lunch?

Andi

No babe, I can’t today.

John smiles when she calls him babe, but frowns again upon hearing the rest.

John

When will you be home?

Andi turns around in his arms, slides her arms up to rest on his shoulders, and kisses him.

Andi

I already called Ted. I told him to get to work on clearing my schedule. I told you it would take a few days.

John

(grins)

Thank you.

Andi

After this morning, I should be thanking you.

Andi presses herself close to him. He groans and grabs her, giving her a scalding hot kiss. She’s breathless when they pull apart.

John

By the way, I really don’t like waking up alone. Wake me when you get up, ok? Even if you don’t have time for fun.

Andi

I’m glad you said that. I’ve been trying to keep it down, but I usually play music when I’m getting ready. It helps get me going, but I didn’t want to bug you.

John

As long as I stop waking up in an empty bed, go for it.

Andi kisses him passionately, making him a little loopy. She doesn’t stop until he’s nearly panting, and then she slips from his arms and goes into the bedroom.

int. bedroom

John is standing in the doorway, eyeing her body and the bed closely, clearly debating how irritated she’ll be if he just grabs her and starts touching her everywhere. Oblivious to his nefarious looks, Andi walks to a cabinet near the door. She opens it, and reveals a small computer monitor hooked up to something. John watches in curiosity from the bathroom door, as she chooses several options on the screen. He can’t make out what’s on it. Then she pulls a microphone down from the side of the monitor and holds a button.

Andi

(into mic)

Good morning boys and girls. On this beautiful day, I think we’ll start with a little Starship.

She let’s go of the button, and John hears Jenna’s voice, but he realizes it’s coming from the bedroom and the bathroom behind him.

Jenna

That’s what I’m talking about.

Andi smiles and the music starts (We Built This City). John realizes that the music, as well as Jenna’s voice, are coming from the intercom system.

John

Is that going through the whole house?

Andi

Yep.

(she walks into the closet and continues, elevated)

If you hurry up and get dressed, you can join Jenna and I for breakfast.

John

Ok. I’ll run to my...

(emphasizing)

... room, since it appears your closet is too full for my stuff.

Andi pokes her head out and sticks her tongue out at him. Then she goes back to the closet. John smiles.

John

(he says quietly as he leaves the room)

One thing at a time John.

int. John’s room.

John is just finishing dressing when Andi knocks on the door and cracks it open.

Andi

You decent?

John

You alone?

Andi

Yes.

John

Then why does it matter?

Andi laughs and enters the room.

Andi

Damn, you are decent, in several ways.

John starts to walk toward her and she dashes out into the hallway. She is standing in the middle of the hallway when he reaches her. She doesn’t move away again.

int. upstairs hallway

John

Do you really think I won’t do this in the hallway?

He grabs her and kisses her. He has her nearly pinned to the wall as he kisses her neck and chest. He reaches for a button on her blouse, but she puts her hand over his.

Andi

(grinning mischievously)

Don’t even think about.

John

You knock on my door, intrude on my cold and empty room, and then I can’t even get a little grope in?

Andi

(slapping his butt)

Behave. And stop with the room already. You live here. Put your stuff wherever you want.

John

(grinning)

Really?

Andi

I don’t know why it’s such a big deal, but yeah, I don’t care. It’s fine.

John hugs her, and she sinks into him for a second, and then pulls away. She grabs his hand and pulls him along.

Andi

Come on slow poke, I’m hungry.

Int. kitchen

Just as they enter the kitchen, the song on the sound system changes to “Two Princes” by the Spin Doctors. John watches amusedly as Andi walks around the island where Jenna is finishing getting breakfast together. They both sing along and sort of dance around each other as they get everything laid out on the island.

Jenna grabs a manilla envelope as she sits down, and hands it to Andi, as she also sits. John walks over and sits opposite them.

Jenna

A messenger just dropped this off a little while ago. It’s from Freddy.

Andi opens it and looks at the documents.

Andi

Oh, duh. I forgot.

John obviously knows what they are, and he seems unhappy that she is being reminded of their ‘arrangement’. Andi gets up and grabs a pen. She sits back down and hands him half of the papers, with a binder clip on them.

Andi

One for you, and one for me.

Andi starts to sign her copy of the documents.

John

Whoa, aren’t you going to read it first?

Jenna is staring at her, with her cereal spoon hovering. John looks at her and she glances at him then back at Andi.

Andi

Why. Freddy’s my lawyer. It’s not like he’d put something in there that would be bad for me.

John

Jeez Andi. I know you trust the guy, but don’t tell me you just read whatever he hands you.

Andi

(smiling)

Don’t be ridiculous, I’m not stupid. But this isn’t a complicated set of documents here. I’m sure he included what I told him.

Jenna

Um, not to be a buzzkill hun, but he’s right.

Andi

(looks at Jenna in surprise)

What?

Jenna

What if he added something?

Andi

Like what?

Jenna

I don’t know, like John has to maintain a distance of 20 feet when in public areas?

Andi

He wouldn’t do...

(beat)

... shit. Ok, I’ll read it.

Andi looks irritated and starts reading the papers. John and Jenna share a comical look.

Andi

Pain in my ass. Jenna, would you get me a red pen?

Jenna tries not to laugh and goes to get a red pen. They spend breakfast finding little things they don’t like about the papers. Then they cross them out, and both initial them each. When they are done, they are laughing and the papers are heavily marked.

Jenna

He didn’t try too hard, did he?

Andi

I swear, when I walk into the boardroom today, I’m going to give him a noogie.

John

Only if you get it on film. I want to see that.

Andi

You don’t suppose there’s something else, do you?

John

(holds up the paper to show it’s state)

What more could there be?

Andi

Well I still don’t entirely understand that last paragraph.

John

I think we’ve got it covered, including the part where I only get to see childhood photos from before 1990 and after 1997.  What was that about?

Jenna

I can think of a few photos he doesn’t want anyone to see.

Andi

(blushing)

Shut up. Some of them are just as incriminating for you as they are for me.

Jenna

(laughing)

True.

John

Ok, where are they? I’ve got some scanning to do. Not computer scanning of course, since I am prohibited from transmitting any visual or audio file of you through the internet or any other means.

Jenna

He is a clever one.

Andi

That’s what worries me. That half this stuff is designed to make us miss something else.

John

(leans over and kisses her cheek)

Stop worrying. We’ve got it covered.

John signs his copy and reaches for hers.

Andi

You’re right.

Andi signs both copies and puts them back in the envelope. She walks around the island and gives John a kiss.

Andi

I’ll give these to Freddy today. I won’t be as amusing as a noogie, but he’ll certainly squirm. Gotta go.

(kisses him again)

Bye.

(to Jenna)

See ya later.

Jenna

Bye hun.

Andi leaves. John runs out the door to stop her in the hallway. Jenna is watching them, a touched smile on her face.

int. main hall

John

Hey.

(Andi turns)

Do you have plans for lunch?

Andi

No, but I really don’t have time to come home.

John

I could drive into the city.

Andi

(surprised)

Oh. Yeah, I suppose, if you want.

John

(touches her face)

I want.

Andi

(blushes)

Ok. Meet me at my office at 12:30?

John

You have an office?

Andi

(laughs)

Where do you think I spend most of my day?

John

Gliding majestically from one uptown board room to the next?

Andi

Cute.

(she kisses him)

Have Jenna give you directions. Bye.

She kisses him swiftly on the cheek and leaves in a hurry. John walks back into the kitchen, looking blissful. Jenna is cleaning up breakfast.

int. kitchen

John

(sighs)

I’m going to do some rearranging of my stuff. Want a hand with this before I get started?

Jenna

(smiles)

I got it, but thanks.

John

She usually does help you, doesn’t she?

Jenna

(smiles)

Yes, she does, if she has time. But I made her promise a long time ago, that if she doesn’t have time she’ll just go, and not make a big deal out of the fact that her housekeeper is cleaning up after her.

John

(laughs)

That would get annoying I would think. Ok, I’ll see you later.

Jenna

(as he gets up to leave)

John.

John

(he turns back)

Yeah.

Jenna

(beat)

Never mind.

John

What’s up?

Jenna

I shouldn’t say anything.

John

(worried)

Is something wrong?

Jenna

No, it’s not that, it’s just…

John

Jenna, you said you tell me things I need to know.

Jenna

It’s not something like that, it’s something else, and I’m not sure I should be telling it to you.

John

(relaxes and smiles)

Ok, I trust your judgment. You know where to find me if you want to talk.

John goes to leave again but turns back as she starts talking.

Jenna

She’s struggling too you know? She’s trying not to feel anything. She’s trying not to care too much. I can see it.

John’s eyes are a little shiny.

Jenna

The thing is... I just thought you’d like to know...

(she grins)

she’s failing miserably.

John gives her a huge grin and strolls from the room. Jenna laughs and continues cleaning up.

int. office hallway

John walks out of an elevator to an office door a few feet away. The door has no name, just one word imprinted on the glass panel Elucidation. He opens it and enters.

int. andi’s outer office.

A man is sitting at a desk. He looks up.

Ted

Can I help you?

John

(John’s expressions shows he wishes Ted were not so attractive)

You must be Ted.

Ted

Yes.

John

I’m John Hampton. I’m taking Andi to lunch.

Ted

(smiling cordially)

Oh yes. Miss Parks mentioned that.

(stands and shakes John’s hand)

Nice to meet you, Ted Campbell.

John

(civil)

You too.

Ted

(unnerved by the cool manner)

Miss Parks is running a little behind. She’s in with her lawyer. I’ll let her know you’re here.

(indicates a few nice arm chairs near the door.)

If you’d care to have a seat?

John sits in a chair by the door. He sees Ted pick up the phone and talk, but can’t hear anything from the distance. After a few moments he hangs up.

Ted

Miss Parks said to tell you that she’ll be in out a moment, as soon as... “Freddy finishes his fit.”

John

(suppresses a laugh)

Thanks.

In a few seconds Freddy comes walking out of a door down a small hallway. He’s ranting a little to Andi, as she follows him out.

Freddy

Fine, I can’t argue with you anymore.

Andi

Oh, I doubt that very much.

Freddy scowls at her, but he kisses her on the cheek. He turns, gives a friendly greeting to John, and leaves.

John

(surprised)

He’s irritated with you and not me?

Andi

Oh, that argument was hours ago. We’re onto something else.

John

Ahh, you ready?

Andi

In one second.

(turns to Ted)

Ted, call Frank Baker and tell him I can’t make Friday.  Also, call Matt’s office and tell him I still need a second print of Atmospheric. I’ll be back by two, and I have my cell if you need me.

John holds the door open for her and she walks out to the hall. When she can’t see him he turns to Ted. He makes a no phone calls gesture. Ted smiles and gives him a thumbs up. John mouths thanks and follows Andi.

Ext. city street

John and Andi are driving through the city in the Jeep. She has her head back, basking in the sun. He is casting glances at her and smiling.

Andi

So, where are we going?

John

Wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise.

Andi

(smiles at him)

So mysterious.

John

That’s me, John Hampton; international man of mystery.

Andi laughs. They drive for a little while and then John turns in to a parking lot attached to a park.

ext. park

they get out of the car and John grabs a picnic basket and a blanket from the back. He takes Andi’s hand and they walk towards a large pond. He lies out the blanket on the ground, in the shade of a tree, and holds Andi’s hand to help her sit. He sits down beside her and starts pulling out food. He has chicken legs, cottage cheese, rolls and potato wedges.

Andi

Hmm, where did this come from?

John

A grocery near my old place.

Andi

(smiling she takes a leg)

Better not let Bonnie see the leftovers. She’ll be grumpy for a week.

John

Yeah, even for a chef, she does take me as the sensitive type. I think she’d hurt me if I ever touched a ketchup bottle.

Andi

I sneak in packets.

John laughs and Andi sits back and looks over the pond. There are people scattered around; some teens playing Frisbee along one side, some joggers going by. But they are far off from most people. Not isolated but intimately alone.

Andi

I don’t think I’ve ever spent much time in this park. It’s lovely.

John

(watching her)

Breathtaking.

Andi

(without looking at him)

You’re not looking.

John

I have the best view in the place.

Andi smiles, but turns around with a more serious look on her face.

John

(sits up closer to her)

What’s wrong?

Andi

(hesitant)

There’s something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about, but I don’t know how to say it.

John

There’s a rare occurrence.

Andi

Smartass.

John

(points to her)

Pot...

(points to himself)

... meet Kettle.

Andi

(laughs)

Point taken.

John

Just say it.

Andi

John, you’ve been extremely attentive, and I appreciate it, I really do. But I think maybe you shouldn’t be so…

John

I’ve changed my mind. Don’t say it.

Andi

(surprised)

What?

John

The answer is no, so let’s not bother with this conversation. How was your morning?

Andi

(giving him a playful look)

You know, technically you work for me. Shouldn’t I have some say...

John

No. I agreed to take care of you, and I will choose how best to do that. I’m not going to stop showing my appreciation of you in one single way. Now let’s not have an argument, ok? You’re not going to win, because I’m not going to budge. Not one inch. So let’s just enjoy our afternoon, please?

Andi

(considers)

Not one inch?

(he shakes his head no and she sighs)

Ok.

Andi reaches for a roll. They sit and chat, and flirt, while they have lunch. When they are done, John pulls two clear plastic cartons from the basket, with a slice of cheesecake in each.

John

Dessert?

Leslie

Wow, what’s that?

John and Andi turn to find a young girl is standing behind them. She’s about 5 years old, and she’s gazing at the cheesecake.

Andi

(smiles at her)

Hello.

Leslie

Hi.

(she smiles brightly and points at the cheesecake)

What’s that?

John

(amused)

It’s called cheesecake.

Leslie

Wow, it looks good. Can I have some?

Leslie’s mom walks up in time to hear this.

Leslie’s Mom

Leslie, you know better than that young lady. You don’t talk to strangers and you don’t ask for their food. I’m sorry about that.

Andi and John are smiling.

Andi

It’s no problem, really.

Leslie’s Mom

Come on sweetie.

She takes the little girls hand and starts to walk away.

Andi

Hey Leslie.

(the girl and mother turn)

I wouldn’t want to hurt my boyfriend’s feelings by not eating the dessert he brought me, but if you’re mom doesn’t mind, I have something else.

Andi takes a small wrapped piece of candy out of her pocket and hands it to Leslie, after her mother nods.

Leslie

Wow, thanks!

Andi smiles at her, charmed.

Andi

You’re very welcome.

The mother smiles too and they leave. Andi sits back and stares at the sky.

John

That was sweet of you. Was it chocolate?

Andi

(smiles and giggles)

Yes.

John

Ok, missing the punch line.

Andi

I don’t know, do you think it’s a bad idea to give a little girl a $20 piece of chocolate? Talk about destroying her diet habits for life.

John

$20 a piece?!

Andi

Yeah, Freddy’s dad used to buy them and I would always get one when I came to the office. But I won’t buy them for myself; far too extravagant. So once a year Freddy comes up with an excuse to give me a box and I make them last as long as possible.

John

That’s some expensive sweets. Are they that good?

Andi

(sighs)

Yes, they are.

(she pulls another from her pocket)

Want to taste a little bit of heaven?

John

(tempted)

You brought a couple for us?

Andi

Yeah. The last two, in fact. I figure Freddy won’t notice until around Christmas. So I’m out for a little while.

John

Then you should have it. I don’t want to take your last.

Andi

(smiles)

I have an idea.

She opens the candy and splits it in half. She rolls over on her stomach and gives him a soft kiss, then pops one half into his mouth, and eats the other half. He eyes light up as he chews.

John

To borrow a phrase from Leslie, Wow!

Andi

(laughs)

I told you.

John smiles lies back and enjoys the chocolate. After a few seconds he looks up and sees Andi staring wistfully across the pond. Leslie and her mother are feeding the geese. Leslie stops for a second and waves, too big as little kids do, to Andi. Andi smiles and waves back. Her smile is a little sad.

John

You want one pretty badly, don’t you?

Andi

One what?

John

You know what.

Andi

(smiles)

Yes, I do.

John

So what are you waiting for?

Andi

(closes her eyes)

A father.

John

I don’t want to sound callous, but it’s not as if you don’t have the resources to do it alone.

Andi

I could, I should, but I don’t want to.

John

(perplexed)

Should?

Andi

(looks at him)

You wouldn’t understand.

John

Give me a shot.

Andi

My family, I should say families; they’re…how do I put this? The word legacy is was always a big one on both sides. My grandparents all saw a bright future when Mom and Dad got married; a large brood of kids to carry on this great heritage. But it didn’t happen. Mom had some problems giving birth to me, and it ended up that I was it. Now, it’s just me and my Gramma Diana. I see her looking at me sometimes, and I can just feel it. This fear, that I will be the last. That our proud families will die with me.

John

Wow, that’s a little heavy, isn’t it?

Andi

It’s how they have all been raised. Not me so much, Mom and Dad abandoned that mentality long before I came along. But even so, once in a while they showed that it mattered to them. Though, for them, it had nothing to do with the money or influence. It was the history. My dad once said they were only blessed with me, but it didn’t matter, because when they were old there would be tons of grandchildren to spoil.

John

I get it. I mean, I don’t know what that must feel like, but I understand what you mean. Obligation isn’t something you like, in any way, is it.

Andi

(smiles sadly)

No, it’s not. But I have been born to privilege, and with that comes...

John

(finishes)

... specific obligation. That one I do know.

(Andi laughs)

Forgive me, but that doesn’t sound like a good reason to have kids.

Andi

(sad again)

It’s not, and that’s one of the reasons I haven’t had any. But there’s something more important that’s holding me back.

John lies down with his head in her lap, trying to keep her spirits light. She strokes his hair and smiles.

John

Why then?

Andi

Are your parents still together?

John

Nope, divorced. Thought they managed to get along pretty well when I was growing up, which helped things a lot.

Andi

My mom and dad loved each other very much. My dad, when I was too young to really know where babies came from, once told me that they were so much in love, that their love erupted into a beautiful thunderstorm. And when the lightening was so bright that they couldn’t look right at it, they turned away. But when they turned back, the storm was gone and had left me. And when they looked in my eyes they could still see the storm churning in them, and they knew I was part of that love.

John

That’s beautiful.

Andi

Obviously mom told me the real logistics later on, but that always stuck with me, and it’s how I always felt. I was a product of how much they loved each other, and they both loved me so much it was magical to me. I don’t know if I could have a baby without her growing up feeling that way. It wouldn’t feel right.

John turns his head and body, burying his face in her stomach, and hugs her.

Dissolve to:

int. conversation room.

Andi is sitting on a settee, leaning back against her ‘pipe’ which is braced against a wall. She appears posed. Andi holds the pose, including her face, as she talks.

Andi

(through a sly smile)

Ok, even I’m going to get sick of this face eventually.

John is revealed by a window, with a canvas on an easel. He is frowning in concentration as he sketches.

John

(smiles but doesn’t look up)

No one could ever get sick of your face.

Andi

Ha ha. Very funny. My lips are getting tired.

John

Baby come on, just hang on a few more minutes. I’m almost done.

John continues to sketch for a little while. There’s a knock at the door.

Andi

(through smile)

Come in.

John

(laughs)

I doubt anyone could hear that.

(louder)

Come in.

Thomas walks into the room. He appears amused by the scene.

Andi

Something funny, Thomas?

Thomas

Just a little familiar Miss.

John

Familiar?

(to Andi)

I thought you never sat for a portrait before.

Andi

I haven’t.

Thomas

No, I was recalling a time when Miss Andi poured her mothers very expensive perfume on her cat, so she wouldn’t have to bath him. I frowned at her when I discovered what she’d done, and she informed me that if I didn’t stop my face would freeze that way.

John laughs. Andi tries not to break her pose while she answers.

Andi

Ever considered a career in standup Thomas?

Thomas

(grinning)

No Miss.

Andi

Pity, you could’ve brought down a room with that; albeit a very small room.

John laughs again and Thomas almost chuckles. Andi winks at Thomas.

Andi

Did you need something Thomas?

Thomas

Mr. Campbell called. He said to remind you that you have a 3:30 meeting with the marketing reps from Cine-Fan.

Andi

Damn! I forgot. What time is it?

John

You have an hour and a half, relax.

Andi

Great, a comedy duo.

John

I’m almost done, I promise. Just a couple of minutes.

Andi

Thomas, could you have my powder blue suit laid out upstairs?

Thomas

Certainly Miss.

Andi

(as he leaves)

Thank you Thomas.

Thomas nods to her and leaves the room. She sits for several minutes while John continues to sketch.

Andi

(imitating the Tin Man)

Oil can. Oil can.

John

(laughing)

Ok, ok. I’m done.

Andi relaxes her pose. She makes some funny faces, stretching out her mouth. She stands up and stretches for a few seconds, and then she starts to walk over to see his work. John blocks her path.

John

Shouldn’t you go get ready.

Andi

Not a chance.

John

(shyly)

It’s just a sketch.

Andi

I want to see.

She kisses his cheek and walks around him. John looks nervous. Andi sees the sketch and catches her breath. John walks over and looks with her. He is biting his lip, waiting for her to say something. She turns to him, wraps her arms around his neck and kisses him tenderly for a few seconds, before pulling back.

Andi

It’s beautiful.

John sighs in relief. Andi giggles and kisses him again.

Andi

You can’t have really been that worried. You have to know you’re very talented.

John

(touches her face)

It’s not that.

Andi

What then?

John

I just... your opinion is very important to me.

Andi

(smiles)

I’m touched. I wish I could’ve created something so beautiful, just once. I think it would have made my mother very happy.

John

Every word from your lips is poetry. I don’t think she could’ve wanted for more from her daughter.

Andi

(blushes)

Sweet deluded man.

John grins at her and kisses her again.

Andi

(looks at the sketch again)

I would love to see more of your work.

John

Really?

Andi

Of course.

John

Well my paintings are in a storage unit in the city. I could bring some to the house.

Andi

(smiles excitedly)

Would you?

John

(pleased by her enthusiasm)

For you.

Andi kisses him with a little more fervor. After a few seconds she pulls away.

Andi

I have to go get ready.

John

You still have over an hour.

Andi

Yeah, but with the traffic…

John

Ok, ok. What is Cine-Fan?

Andi

It’s a small DVD distribution company.

John

For Atmospheric?

Andi

Yeah. I don’t know why they’re having such a hard time getting distribution. It’s a great film.

John

Any chance I could see it?

Andi

(pleasantly surprised)

Sure. I could bring home a copy tonight.

John

Great, we can watch it with dinner.

Andi

That’ll be fun. I’ll try to be home by seven.

John

(frowns at her)

Seven?

Andi

What?

John

We had lunch at 12:30.

Andi

(sighs)

I’ll grab a snack, I promise.

John

Go get dressed, I’ll pack you one.

Andi

I can just pick something…

John

Something fast isn’t going to be good for you. I’ll pack you some fruit and you can eat on the way into the city.

Andi

(sighs but smiles at him)

Alright, my bossy, yet handsome, male nurse.

John laughs and tickles her briefly as she scoots by him to leave the room.

int. Screening Room.

The room is lit with candles that look like they’ve been burning a while, and a nice dinner is laid out. John is sitting on the couch, looking upset. He hears the front door and gets up. He stalks out of the room and finds Andi in the kitchen.

Int. kitchen

Andi has taken off her shoes and suit jacket, so she’s again only in a tank and her slacks. She is getting a drink from the fridge when she hears him come in.

Andi

Hey sweetie. What are you still doing up? It’s late.

John

(scowling)

I know.

Andi

What’s wrong?

John

What’s wrong? Andi, it’s almost one in the morning!

Andi

I’m aware of that.

John

Don’t be flippant with me.

Andi

(upset)

I wasn’t trying to be. What’s the matter?

John

Did you forget we had dinner plans?

Andi

I called you. I told you I was going to be late and not to hold dinner for me.

John

You said late, you didn’t say early morning.

Andi

(scoffs)

Sorry for the semantic mistake. Next time I’ll be more specific with my word choice.

John turns and walks out of the room. Andi stares at the door for a second and follows him out into the Main Hall.

Andi

John?

Int. main hall

John walks to the Screening Room door, opens it, and stands aside so she can see the room. She looks in and is surprised.

Andi

You’ve been waiting for me?

John

Of course.

Andi

I told you not to.

John

(still irritated)

Well I thought it would be a nice surprise!

Andi

So you’re mad at me because I told you that I wasn’t going to be home for dinner, and then I wasn’t?!

John

No!

Andi

Then what?!

John

It’s one in the damn morning Alexandra. You shouldn’t be out so late. You’re supposed to be getting plenty of sleep, and I know you have a 9 AM meeting.

Andi

(pissy)

Oh, I see. So instead of harping on me about my fricking work ethic, again, you’re going to act like a spoiled child because I wasn’t here for our dinner plans, which I called and cancelled?!

John

I am not one of your business meetings you can just cancel.

Andi

Aren’t you?!

John looks hurt and angry. Andi looks briefly remorseful, but is still angry and defensive. She addresses him coldly.

Andi

I’m tired, I’m going to bed. I’ll have Thomas turn down the bed in the Green Room for you.

John stands there with an angry pose as she walks upstairs without him.

Int. Green bedroom.

John is pacing the floor, ranting quietly to himself. He is getting ready for bed. He hears her bedroom door slam and he walks towards his door. He pauses at the knob, arguing with himself.

John

No, I’m not... damn it, why the hell did she...

He growls and stalks away again. He continues muttering to himself as he shuts out the light and gets into bed. He sits up a couple of times, like he’s going to go to her room, but he just lays back down huffily.

Dissolve to:

Int. green bedroom, a couple hours later.

The room is bathed in moonlight. John is lying in bed, with one arm on over his head, looking sad. He looks up as he hears the bedroom door open and close. The door is in shadow and he can’t see who has come in. Then Andi walks over to the other side of the bed, nearer the window. He can see her, in a silk robe. She kneels down next to the side of the bed and puts her elbows on the bed. She then props her head in her hands and looks at him. John turns on his side to look at her.

Andi

(very sincerely)

I’m sorry.

John

(relieved)

Me too.

Andi

I never should have said that. Can you forgive me?

John

Already done. I’m sorry I overreacted. I just really didn’t like you being out so late, when I had no idea where you were.

Andi

I know. I realized it about 20 seconds after I slammed my door.

John

(smiles and reaches out to touch her face)

You’re faster than I am. So how did things go tonight?

Andi

(smiles)

Good, but let’s talk about that in the morning.

Andi stands up, holds out her hand, and looks a little uneasy.

Andi

Come to bed?

John rolls quickly to the other side of the bed, and makes a nearly comical leap off of it. We hear him moving quickly for the door. There’s a sound suggesting he tripped or kicked something. John curses, then the light comes through as he holds open the bedroom door for her.

John

I thought you’d never ask.

Andi laughs. Then she walks slowly over to the door, grabs his hand with a playful look, and pulls him through the door. He closes it behind them.

Int. andi’s bedroom.

Andi and John are cuddling in bed.

John

Andi?

Andi

Hmm?

John

Why doesn’t Jenna like that there are boxes of your parent’s clothes still in the closet?

Andi

(sighs)

She says it’s my way of not really making this my room.

John

Is it?

Andi

Maybe a little.

John

Why?

Andi

I don’t know.

John

Really? Somehow I doubt that. You’re pretty self-analytical most times.

Andi

Hmm, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

John

(smiles)

Usually a little of both.

Andi

(laughs but then is thoughtful)

I guess I don’t feel like I deserve it yet.

John

(frowns)

And when will you?

Andi

When it’s not just me anymore.

John

What do you mean?

Andi

This is my parent’s room.

John

(understanding)

You mean, a parent’s room.

Andi

Yeah, I guess I do.

They lie quietly, both in deep thought.

Int. kitchen.

John walks in and Andi is on her cell phone.

Andi

(into the phone)

I’m going to stop leaving messages if you don’t return them. I know you’ve never been good with returning calls, but come on girl.

(sighs)

I love you bunches. Call me.

Andi hangs up in frustration.

John

Who was that?

Andi

Anne’s voicemail again.

(Andi doesn’t see John look uneasy)

This is getting frustrating. I don’t know why she hasn’t called me back. I tried to call Patricia, but they said she’s out of town for work and apparently there’s no cell reception where she is.

John

Who’s Patricia?

Andi

Anne’s wife. Now there’s a party you should’ve been to.

John

(smiling)

Oh yeah?

Andi

Two weeks in Amsterdam. We had the most amazing time.

John

Why Amsterdam?

Andi

They were the first country to legalize same-sex marriages. It was like a dream come true when we found out they’d passed it. Since Patricia’s mother was Dutch, she has dual citizenship, so they could legally get married there.

John

And the trip lasted two weeks?

Andi

(smiling)

Yep. I got a charter jet, and we all flew over. Patricia’s parents, me, Jenna, Thomas, Patricia’s best friends Ellie, Tina, a friend of mine and Anne’s from college, and my Gramma. It was the best trip I can ever remember.

John

(frowning)

Anne’s parents didn’t go?

Andi

(suddenly sad)

Anne’s mom died when we were about 10. She had breast cancer. And her dad...

(sighs heavily)

... he wasn’t as supportive as we’d all expected.

John

That sucks.

Andi

Yeah, it does.

John

(trying to steer her from the touch subject)

I never did ask, how did you meet Anne?

Andi

Our dad’s were college roommates. We’ve been friends since before we could say each others names correctly. Mom called us Raggedy Anne and Andi, the troublemakers.

John

(laughs)

Cute.

Andi picks up a stack of mail from the counter and starts going through it. She stops at one envelope and opens it, excited.

Andi

Sweet.

John

What is it?

Andi

Our tickets to CeCe Montrose’ annual party.

John

Our tickets?

Andi

Well, I bought them a while back, and I always get two. You will be my date, right?

John

Is it formal?

Andi

Yes.

John

I’m not big on tuxes. They never really suited me.

Andi

(smiles)

Don’t worry, I know a great men’s designer. We’ll find you something perfect.

She walks over and slips her arms around his neck.

Andi

Come on. CeCe’s parties are legendary, and we raise a lot of money for charities. CeCe picks a different one each year.

John

(grins resignedly)

I guess I wouldn’t be much of a boyfriend if I made you go stag.

Andi smiles and kisses him excitedly. She pulls away and goes back to sorting through the mail, while John fixes a bowl of cereal.

John

Hey, you were gonna tell me how things well last night.

Andi

(happy)

Yes, I was. We got the distribution set up. It took a lot of negotiation, and I ended up kicking in a little to get them to agree, but it it’s a done deal.

John

Congratulations.

Andi

I’m just happy people are going to see Mark and Jacob’s movie.

John

Thanks to you.

Andi

I’m just the money man; they are the creative genius’.

John

(smiles at her seductively over his cereal bowl)

John But you’re an adorable money man.

Andi laughs and blows him a kiss. She continues to sort the mail while he’s eating.

Int. Andi’s bedroom

John is looking at himself in the long mirror. He is wearing a very nice tuxedo (something like Jean Yves Mirage), and he’s straightening his tie.

John

(calling out)

I really don’t know about this. I should’ve gotten something more traditional.

Andi walks out of the bathroom, putting on an earring. She is wearing an evening gown. Her hair is up, in a delicate silver ring. She is wearing a simple silver locket and small dangling earrings. John is staring at her in the mirror. She walks up behind him and adjusts his tie in the mirror.

Andi

You look gorgeous.

John

I think we should stay home.

Andi

(pouts at him)

I’ve been looking forward to this. And we haven’t really gone out together before. What’s wrong?

John turns around. He puts his hands on her hips and gives her a look which is full of suggestion.

John

I don’t know if I can keep my hands to myself with you looking like that.

Andi blushes and kisses him.

Andi

Get over it.

She flits away but he manages to swat her butt. He watches her walk into the closet, obviously spellbound. John turns back to the mirror and grimaces again. Then he hears a coyote whistle from the bedroom door. He turns, and Jenna is leaning against the door frame.

Jenna

Very nice.

John

(blushing slightly)

Thank you.

Jenna

I meant the threads, but you look good too.

She grins sarcastically and he laughs. Andi comes out with low strapless heels on. She has a wrap over her arm.

Jenna

(appraising)

I told you that dress was a killer. About damn time you wore it.

Andi blushes and avoids John’s curious expression.

John

(looking at Andi but talking to Jenna)

How long has she had it?

Jenna

(ignoring an imploring look from Andi)

3 years, I think.

(Andi gives her an exasperate look, Jenna smiles at her)

Phillip has the car out front. The tickets are on the hall table. Have fun.

Jenna gives John a wink and leaves. Andi looks embarrassed. John walks over and runs a hand down her arm, then back up and to the short sleeve of the gown.

John

For me?

Andi

(rolls her eyes)

Maybe.

John

(kisses her)

Thank you.

Andi

(glowing)

Let’s go.

She starts to pull away but then gets a glimpse of them in the mirror. She stops and he sees what she’s looking at. He adjusts his position so he’s at her side, his arms around her waist.

John

Not bad, huh?

Andi

I told you, you look gorgeous. Seriously hot.

John

(kissing her neck)

I mean how good we look together.

Andi smiles but doesn’t answer. After a few seconds she pulls him toward the bedroom door.

Int. hotel ball room

The room is full of people, the attire is very formal. It’s a little loud, but not excessively. John escorts Andi in. Several people notice them.

John

So, help me out here.

(whispers in her ear)

Do we pretend they’re not staring?

Andi

(smiles obtusely)

What?

John

Gotcha.

He takes her arm and they mingle. Andi introduces John to several people. Most seem to be trying to decide if they know who he is, assuming he is ‘someone.’ Most are polite and party charming. Some are more aloof and pompous. Andi obviously knows who they are, and she finds ways to not linger around them. John tries to look relaxed, but he’s nervous. He becomes especially nervous when more than one woman seems to be flirting with him excessively. Jenna also helps extricate them from these situations. Just as they are escaping one, walking to the bar, a pretty blonde walks up as soon as they order their drinks.

Patricia

Alexandra, darling. Is that you?

Andi

(kisses her hello)

Hi sweetie. What do you mean; you’ve suddenly forgotten what I look like?

Patricia

I didn’t forget, you just don’t look like you. You’re ravishing. Did you find a new spa I should know about?

Andi

(confounded)

No. I haven’t worn this dress before, but other than that, same old me. Patricia, this is John Hampton. John, Patricia Bellamy.

John

(shakes her hand)

Pleasure.

Patricia

(smiles at him)

Likewise. Are you responsible for this?

John

I’ll take some credit.

Andi

(looking between them)

What are you two talking about?

Patricia

(gives John a wink and changes subjects)

Never mind. So, how’s tricks?

Andi

(smiling)

Same as usual, you?

Patricia

Over all fine. But I’m lonely and bored to tears.

Andi

(pouting at her)

Poor baby.

(smiling)

Where is Anne anyway. I have to kick her ass. I’ve left a dozen messages in the last month, not one return. I’m starting to think she’s mad at me or something.

Patricia

(mortified)

Oh my god, I didn’t call you. I was supposed to. I’m so sorry. I got dragged off to Belize for a huge photo shoot problem, and I just forgot.

Andi

(concerned)

Apparently. What’s going on?

Patricia

The old coot finally kicked. She’s been in Milan for weeks, handling arrangements and dealing with his trophy wife and cousins and all that crap.

Andi

(holding back tears)

When did he…?

Patricia

Oh shit. Honey I’m so sorry. I didn’t think. Sometimes I forget you and he were close... before. Jeez, I can be such an insensitive bitch.

Andi

(smiles)

It’s ok, really. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Patricia

I’m going easy on me. I practically sighed with relief when she told me. And then immediately felt like shit for it. It’s just…

Andi

I know.  You were always a little afraid she’d listen to him one day.

Patricia

(smiles self consciously)

I was. After 10 year, I’m still afraid of losing her. I don’t know why she puts up with me.

Andi

(smiles)

True love puts up with a lot of hun.

Patricia

Doesn’t it though. Oh shit.

Patricia is looking through the crowd. A man is walking towards them. He is very good looking, well dressed, and decidedly arrogant. Andi watches him approach icily. John looks at her with concern. He leans in to whisper so only she and Patricia can hear.

John

Baby, who is it?

The man walks up before she can answer, and greets them.

Steven

Patricia.

Patricia

Dickhead.

Steven

(disdain)

Very mature, Patricia.

Patricia

You must be fucking kidding.

Steven

Alexandra.

Steven goes to kiss her cheek. She steps back, which brings her closer to John.

Andi

What the fuck do you want?

Steven

(condescendingly)

A little civility, perhaps?

Andi

Blow me.

John smiles.

Steven

Is that attitude really necessary? It’s been months. Can’t we find a way to be friends?

Andi

Is that a trick question?

Steven acts put upon, then looks at John. He seems a bit taken back, and then he looks at Andi again.

Steven

Who’s your friend?

Andi

This is John Hampton. John, this is Steven Brinker.

Andi grins subtly when she feels John stiffen behind her. Steven reaches out to shake John’s hand. John looks at him with disgust. Andi can’t see this, but Patricia does, and gives an approving smile.

Patricia

So what are you doing here Steven? Shouldn’t you be in a debtor’s prison by now?

Steven

I believe those were done away with in the 19th century.

Patricia

Pity. So who are you leeching off of now, Stevie boy?

Andi

Oh, didn’t you hear? Daddy gave him back his allowance.

Patricia

What?!

Steve

(shocked)

How did you…?

Andi

Your dad came to see me about a couple of months ago. He told me all about it. How you were ready to give Page Six a nice exclusive, for a fee of course. You were going to tell them all about how cutting him off left you destitute and desperate. How it drove you to try to seduce a young heiress into marrying you. How you figured her plain appearance would make her appreciate the attention and not ask too many questions.

Patricia gasps. John is looking at Steven as if he could strike at any moment. Steven’s cocky attitude slips, and he looks afraid, but he keeps his eyes on Andi.

Steven

Alexandra…

Andi

(interrupts)

I told him not to give you a fucking dime. I told him I’d deal with it, but he refused to allow you to insult me and my family any more than you already have. He just wanted me to know that I’d likely see you out again. Well, I’ve seen you. And I’m less than impressed.

Steven

(touches her arm)

Andi, can’t we let the past…

John pulls Andi closer so Steven’s hand falls from her arm. He leans in, so only the three of them can hear him.

John

Touch her again, and I’ll break your damn jaw.

Steven steps back, definitely scared now. Andi and Patricia are grinning.

Andi

(turns to Patricia)

You’re right, this party is getting dull.

(to John)

You wanna get out of here? I’m starting to feel like I’m in an episode of Dallas.

John

(smiles at her)

Where to?

Andi

(thinks for a second)

Take me dancing.

John

(puts an arm around her shoulders and leans in)

As you wish.

John kisses her softly.

Andi

(to Anne)

I’ll call you tomorrow, sweetie.

Patricia

(grinning at her)

Have fun.

Andi

(to Steven; mimicking Patricia)

Dickhead.

Steven stares after her, stunned at the dismissal. Patricia snickers and walks away from him.

Fade to:

Int.  nightclub.

The place is full but not packed tight. John pulls Andi on the floor. After they’ve been dancing for a few minutes Andi pulls back a little.

Andi

(she has to yell a little for him to hear her)

I didn’t tell you why Jenna really likes this dress.

John looks are her questioningly, then is almost gawking as she unzips the side of her skirt. She pulls away the full skirt to reveal a shorter skirt underneath, just above the knee. She tosses the skirt at him and laughs. He wraps it around his neck and grabs her, kissing her while they start to dance again. After some fast and energetic music, a slow song starts. They hold each other close and dance.

fade to:

SERIES OF SHOTS

A)  Them playing in bed, her hitting him with a pillow.

B)  John is cooking in the kitchen. He walks by Andi and

kisses head, while she is working on the built-in

    computer.

C)  John, Jenna and Andi playing cards.

D)  John and Andi curled up on the couch of the Screening

    room, watching a movie.

E)  Andi putting a sandwich next to John as he paints in

    the Light room.

F)  Andi and John, sitting in the kitchen, looking at

travel brochures while Thomas is hovering, watching

them with a smile on his face.

INT. ANDI’S BEDROOM - night

John is alone in bed. He wakes up suddenly and realizes Andi isn’t there. He checks the bathroom, lightly calling her name, before he goes downstairs.

Int. main hall

As he walks down the main staircase, he can see light flickering under the door of the screening room. He opens the door and he can see Andi’s feet hanging off the front of the couch. She’s watching TV.

Int. screening room

John enters the room and walks around to face her.

John

Andi, what are you doing up so…

He stops when he sees her. She’s curled up and appears to be miserable. She also looks like she’s been crying. He immediately kneels down in front of the couch and feels her forehead.

John

Baby? What’s wrong?

Andi

It’s nothing.

John

Should I call the doctor?

Andi

No, I’m ok.

John

You don’t look ok.

Andi

Thank you.

John

Andi...

Andi

Really, I’m alright. It’s not that serious, I’m just really uncomfortable and I’ve had some pain, and I was trying to distract myself with late night television, since I can’t sleep like this.

John

(stands up and holds a hand out)

Come back to bed.

Andi

I’m good.

John

Andi.

Andi

What?

John

You can watch TV as easily in bed as you can here.

Andi

No, I’m fine. You go back to bed.

John

You’re going to spend the night in here?

Andi

Yes. It’s no big deal. I’ve done it before.  I’ll probably doze off in another hour or two.

John

Fine.

John looks frustrated and walks out of the room. Andi watches him go, apparently thinking he’s angry.

Andi

(to herself)

Damn it.

She huffs and focuses on the TV again. After a couple of minutes, John walks in with a pile of sheets, a blanket, and a few pillows. Andi looks at him curiously. He pulls a large ottoman over to an extremely wide chair. He arranges it into a kind of bed, tucking in sheets around it and arranging pillows.

Andi

What are you doing?

John

I figure this will make a decent bed, with the right adjustments.

Andi

You’re going to sleep, in that?

John

No, we’re going to sleep in that.

Andi

(moaning at him)

John. The whole point was that I didn’t want to keep you up. Go to bed.

John

No. I can’t sleep anyway.

Andi

Why not?

John

Because you’re not there.

He walks over and picks her up. She’s surprised.

Andi

Stop it! You’ll pull something.

John

(smiling)

Don’t worry about me.

John sets her down on the make-shift bed. The pillows and cushions let them lounge comfortably without laying down. John slides in beside her, pulls her over to cuddle on his chest and covers them both with a light blanket.

John

Not to bad, actually.

Andi

(smiles)

It’s kinda cozy.

John

(kisses the top of her head)

Yes, it is.

Andi

Sweetheart, you don’t have to…

John

You know what? You never did tell me what the advice was.

Andi

(distracted by the change in subject)

What?

John

The advice you gave Freddy’s receptionist, which you thought earned you an invitation to her wedding.

Andi

Oh. I told her to stop thinking so much. And the kiss test.

John

The kiss test?

Andi

Yeah. She knew Parker was thinking of proposing. Some guys hide it well, but most don’t. She was nervous, because she loved him, but she just couldn’t seem to decide if it was a ‘forever kind of love’ as she put it. So I told her to use the kiss test.

John

And that is?

Andi

You wrap your arms around the person in question, close your eyes, and kiss them.

John

And what does that prove?

Andi

It’s not about proof, it’s about feelings. If you can lose yourself, even while acting with intent; if you don’t feel like you ever want to let go, then you know it’s for real. If you don’t feel it, then either they’re not the one, or you’re not ready for forever.

John

(smiles)

Does that really work?

Andi

Yes, it does. It saved my ass, I’ll tell you that.

John

(curious)

How so?

Andi

I tried it on Steven, and that’s why the engagement wasn’t announced yet when the shit hit the fan. I told him we had to wait, that I needed more time. Fortunately, Freddie didn’t know that, so he barreled on ahead with the pre-nup stuff. And that’s when I found out the truth. The whole situation would’ve been a lot more embarrassing if we’d ever made our engagement public.

John

(hesitates)

So…

Andi

What?

John

What did it feel like? When you kissed him?

Andi

(pauses, considering)

Did I ever tell you I did some theater in college?

John

No. Are you changing the subject?

Andi

(giggles)

No, I’m not. So we did Twelfth Night once.

John

Who did you play?

Andi

Viola.

John

The lead, impressive.

Andi

(smiles)

I think it had more to do with how much I looked like the guy they chose to play Sebastian. But anyway, the guy who played the Orsino was a pretty good actor. But when we kissed, at the end, though to everyone else it appeared passionate, to me it felt too... deliberate I guess.

John

How do you mean?

Andi

We did the show 5 times. Each time, the kiss was exactly the same; every single moment of it. But even the first time; it felt practiced to death. It was like he had studied great kisses in movies and tried to craft it. There was no spontaneity, and definitely nothing passionate about it. That’s how it felt with Steven. I didn’t understand why, at the time; though it obviously made sense in retrospect.

John tilts up Andi’s face and gives her a soft kiss in the lips.

John

The man was even stupider than he looked. So, you’re a fan of Shakespeare, I take it?

Andi

Of course; though mostly the comedies. The dramas are just so depressing. I did Midsummer Night’s Dream too. That was fun.

John

Who’d you play?

Andi

Hypolita.

John

I wish I could’ve seen that.

They smile at each other and she cuddles up to him as they watch the TV.

Int.  kitchen - morning

Jenna is making breakfast. Thomas walks in, looking perplexed.

Thomas

Miss Andi and Mr. Hampton are not in their room.

Jenna

(smiles)

I know.

Thomas

You do?

Jenna crooks a finger to have him follow her and leaves the kitchen.

Int. main hall

She goes across the hall to the Screening Room door. She makes a ‘quiet’ gesture and carefully opens the door. Thomas pokes his head in and sees John and Andi asleep in the chair/bed. Jenna closes the door and Thomas follows her back to the kitchen.

Int. kitchen

Jenna

I think Andi’s stomach was bothering her last night. I noticed some looks at dinner, but she was hiding it well.

Thomas

Shall I wake them?

Jenna

I’ll bring breakfast in when it’s ready. No reason to wake them before then. I don’t imagine they got a lot of sleep.

Thomas turns to leave, but turns back when Jenna speaks.

Jenna

So, what do you think?

Thomas

About?

Jenna

Don’t play coy, you know what I mean.

Thomas

It’s not my place…

Jenna

(interrupts)

And don’t play dutiful servant with me either. What do you think?

Thomas

(hesitates but answers in an even tone)

If he can tell her the truth without grave bodily harm to himself, perhaps you and I won’t have to worry so much in the future.

Jenna smiles as Thomas leaves the room.

Int. screening room

Jenna is setting up breakfast on the same table where she previously set up dinner. Andi comes awake slowly. John is still out cold, so they talk quietly.

Andi

Morning.

Jenna

Morning.

Andi

What’s all this?

Jenna

An Amway convention. What does it look like?

Andi

Well, you’re in a mood. What’s up?

Jenna

(gives her an irritated look)

You’re stomach was bothering you at dinner, wasn’t it?

Andi

Just a little.

Jenna looks at her with disbelief.

Andi

Seriously, it wasn’t that bad. It didn’t get bothersome until later last night.

Jenna

You still should’ve said something.

Andi

I’m fine.

Jenna

No you’re not. I told you that you shouldn’t have put this surgery off. But you were so worried about the movie, and the new wing at King’s County.

Andi

Jenna, the doctor said it could wait.

Jenna

No, the doctor said it could wait if it were necessary, but that it shouldn’t. You insisted.

Andi

Jenna…

Jenna

(interrupts)

Enough. It’s time to stop putting yourself off. I want you to call the doctor and schedule it for next week.

(Andi starts to argue)

Or I’ll tell him.

Andi

(looks at John, still asleep)

Tell him what?

Jenna

I know you’ve been sick three times in the last week. You don’t hide it as well as you think. If I tell him, do you really think you’ll be able to put it off for even a day?

Andi

(irritated)

I will have the surgery when I decide, no matter what you tell him. Damn it, it’s my life.

Jenna

Yes, it is. But you’re life impacts more than just you Andi. I’m not going to let you keep driving yourself like this. I kept my mouth shut when you went into workaholic mode after Steven.

Andi

(grins)

Barely.

Jenna

(smiles)

Fair enough. But not anymore, Andi. You’re going to call the doctor, or I’ll harp on you day and night. And I’ll tell John, and Freddy, and Thomas, and…Diana.

Andi

(big eyes)

You wouldn’t!

Jenna

Try me. She called about an hour ago, by the way. Her exact words, “Tell my granddaughter to get her ass out from behind her desk and get over here.”

Andi

I know. I meant to go last week, but I got distracted.

Jenna

I suggest you go today.

Andi

I better.

(quiet)

I’m scared Jenna.

Jenna

(soothing)

I know.

Andi

I’ll call him after breakfast, before I go to Evan’s Park.

Jenna

Thank you.

Andi

Bite me.

Jenna grins and leaves the room. Andi lies back against John and closes her eyes as he wraps his arms around her in his sleep.

Ext. tree lined road

Jenna is driving an old convertible. She pulls in at a large sign that reads, “Evan’s Park Retirement Community.” The grounds appear extensive as she drives up the lane to the main building. It’s obviously a very high end place. Jenna parks and goes inside. Then we see her walking across a large grassy area with lots of trees. She is walking towards a park bench with an elderly woman sitting on it. She smiles serenely as she sees Andi.

Andi

(childish voice)

Hi Gramma.

Diana

(fond but stern)

It’s about damn time young lady.

Andi

(hugs her)

I’m sorry; I’ve been so busy lately.

Diana

So I hear.

Andi

(suspicious)

From?

Diana

I have my sources.

Diana pats the bench behind her and Andi sits.

Diana

So, how are you feeling, my darling.

Andi

I had a rough night, but not too bad. I called Dr. Bates this morning. We’re moving the surgery to next Thursday.

Diana

Jenna?

Andi

(laughs)

Yeah.

Diana

Well, my father used to say, “If you don’t have enough common sense, at least surround yourself with people who do.”

Andi

Thanks.

Diana

I don’t suppose you’ve changed your mind about…

Andi

No, there’s no reason for you to sit around a hospital looking dourly at people. I’ll come see you as soon as I’m able to. Though, you’d see me a lot sooner if you’d just move back into the house.

Diana

Don’t be silly. Why would you need some silly old woman roaming around there? That’s not the place for me, my dear.

Andi

They buy another house. You can have hired nurses. Hell, hire a doctor to be on call 24/7. I still don’t understand why you insist on living here.

Diana

Because here I have friends, people to keep me company.

Andi

(pouting)

I could keep you company.

Diana

When on earth would you have the time? I swear, until very recently you were on every page of the community pages of the paper every day. This project, that committee, this trust; you’re an extremely busy girl.

Andi

I’d make time for you.

Diana

I know you would, my darling. But I prefer this. I feel more independent here than I ever felt before. It helps keep me young.

Andi

(smiles)

Well it does work. You look great.

Diana

Thank you, love. You look incredibly lovely, yourself. What on earth has put such a blush on your cheeks?

(Andi blushes)

Or should I say whom?

Andi

It’s complicated.

Diana

So I hear.

Andi

Gramma, you should’ve worked in intelligence.

Diana

How do you know I didn’t?

Andi

You said you were a nurse in the Navy.

Diana

(winks)

What else would I say?

Andi laughs and hugs her.

Diana

So, when do I get to meet him?

Andi

(hesitates)

I don’t know. It’s not that I don’t want you to, it’s just…well it’s not what you think.

Diana

Sweetheart, you’re a grown woman. How you handled your affairs is your business. But I haven’t seen you smile like that since before your mother and father left us. I just want to meet the man responsible.

Andi

(smiling but sad)

I miss them so much. A lot more lately than usual.

Diana

Of course you miss them, my dear. So I do. But a piece of them is always with us.

Andi

(smiles brighter)

I know.

Diana

So?

Andi

We’re going away after the surgery; a vacation. I promise, when we get home I’ll bring him.

Diana

Good. Now, tell me, what have you been up to lately?

Ext. hospital parking lot.

John and Andi are parked in the jeep. Andi looks panicked and she’s taking deep breaths.

John

(soothing tone)

Just breathe baby.

Andi

I’m not feeling so hot. We should call Dr. Bates and tell him we have to reschedule.

John

(smiling)

Do you really think we’re going to do that?

Andi

(uneasy)

Maybe?

John

Come on babe.

John gets out and comes around to open the door for Andi. He holds her hand as they walk into the hospital.

Int. hospital room.

Andi is sitting in the bed with an IV, getting a little groggy. John is sitting on the side of her bed, holding her free hand.

Andi

John?

John

Yes sweetheart?

Andi

I know I haven’t actually said this before, but…I’m scared.

John

(smiling)

I know.

Andi

Listen, before I get too anes... anthest... anst...

John

(trying not to laugh)

Anesthetized?

Andi

(frustrated)

Yes. There are letters in a box in the closet. They’re on top of Mom and Dad’s clothes. I want you to give them to everyone. There’s one for Jenna, and my Gramma, and…

John

(tearing up)

Stop it. Just stop.

Andi

(she’s getting very dopey)

I just have to...

John

You are going to be fine, do you hear me?

Andi

(almost asleep)

John...

John

(kisses her cheek)

I’ll see you in a few hours.

Andi falls asleep. In a few minutes, some nurses and doctors come in and take her out on a gurney. When she’s gone, John walks out of the room.

Int. hospital family room

Thomas, Jenna, Freddy, and Freddy’s wife, Molly, are already in the room. They look up when John walks in.

John

They just took her in.

Their reaction is subdued. John sits in a chair and buries his head in his hands.

Jenna walks over and sits down next to him. She puts an arm on his shoulder.

Jenna

She’s going to be fine.

John

(looks at her, not able to hide his fear)

She better be.

Peter walks into the room.

John

(looking up in surprise)

Hey man. What are you doing here?

Peter

I figured there’d be room for one more.

John gets up and hugs Peter. He introduces him to everyone.

Int. hospital family room – a few hours later

Peter is sitting and talking to Jenna. Freddy is staring out a window while Molly and Thomas are playing gin. John is pacing the room. A doctor comes in the room. Everyone looks up. Their looks turn to concern at his worried expression. John stalks toward him.

Dr. Bates

She’s in recovery.

John

And?

Dr. Bates

The laparoscopy went well. We strengthened the valve and it should eliminate the issues she has been having.

John

Then what are you concerned about?

Dr. Bates

(in that doctors matter of fact tone)

Malignant Hyperthermia. It’s a reaction to the anesthetic. It’s extremely rare. She went into cardiac arrest. We were able to revive her, but...

John

(breathing heavily, interrupts him)

Will she be ok?

Freddy

John let him…

John

(vehemently)

Will she be ok?!

Dr. Bates

We won’t know until she wakes up. Her brain was without oxygen for a brief...

John starts to hyperventilate. Peter grabs him and puts him in a chair. Jenna sits next to him and holds his hand. Molly is clinging to Freddy’s side as he continues to talk to the doctor quietly. Thomas is hovering in the corner, looking stricken.

Peter

Just breathe man, breathe. She’s going to be fine. Look at me.

John looks up at Peter. Tears are streaming down his cheeks.

John

Pete...

Peter

She’s going to be alright man.

John

Pete, I can’t lose her.

Peter

You’re not going to.

Jenna is holding Johns arm and he pulls it out and wraps it around her shoulders, hugging her. She looks up at him, tears in her eyes, but a smile of encouragement on her face.

Jenna

She’s never done anything the easy way. This is just Andi, having to make things harder. Not taking care of herself. She’ll be fine. We’ll take care of her. That’s what we do.

Thomas

(clears his throat to get their attention)

Yes, we will.

John

(gives him a watery smile)

Yes, we will.

The doctor leaves and Freddy and Molly walk over to them.

Freddy

We’ll know more when she wakes up. It could be a several hours.

John

Fred, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have…

Freddy

It’s ok John.

(sighs heavily)

I should go get Diana.

John

Andi’s grandmother?

Freddy

Yes.

Thomas

She should be here. I’ll go.

Freddy

Thank you Thomas, I always get lost trying to find that damned place.

Thomas smiles and leaves without another word.

Cu of the clock – an hour passes

Thomas comes in with an elderly woman in a wheelchair. She is imposing, even while being pushed by Thomas.

Diana

Where is she?

Freddy

She’s still in the recovery room Mrs. Stayton. They won’t let her have visitors right now.

Diana

(non-plussed)

Then bring me the doctor.

Freddy immediately leaves the room. Diana gestures Thomas to wheel her over in front of John, who is still sitting in the same spot.

Diana

You are John, I take it?

John

Yes ma’am.

Diana

I understand you are in love with my granddaughter?

John

(smiles)

Yes ma’am.

Diana

Then you should know better than to worry. If you love her, you must know.

John

Know what ma’am?

Diana

She’s strong, and stubborn. And, unless I’m in the room, she always has the last word.

John

(smiles with tears in his eyes)

Yes ma’am.

Freddy comes in with the doctor, who is questioned thoroughly by Diana. John stands up and waits for her to finish. He turns to Jenna and they exchange a smile.

Int. hospital room

John is alone in Andi’s room. It’s dark outside the window. He is sitting by her bed, holding her hand. He is quietly looking at her for a few seconds before he talks.

John

Please baby. You gotta wake up. I have some things I have to tell you, but not like this. I need you conscious, so you can yell at me before you forgive me. Please sweetheart.

Int. hospital room - morning

John is asleep in the chair by the bed. His hand is still holding Andi’s. Thomas is asleep in the corner. Andi’s hand twitches and her eyes start to open slowly. She blinks at the bright light in the room. John, sensing movement starts to wake up. When he sees Andi’s eyes are open, he is immediately alert. He jumps out of the chair and looks down at her.

John

Andi? Can you hear me baby?

She looks at him groggily, and then gives him a yawning grin and smiles.

Andi

Hey sweetie.

John

(sharply, but with relief)

Thomas!

Thomas wakes up. He sees Andi look at him and dashes to the bed.

Thomas

Miss?

Andi

(smiles brightly)

Hi Thomas.

Thomas smiles at her, than at John.

John

Get the doctor.

Thomas leaves the room quickly.

John

(smiles down at Andi)

How you doing babe?

Andi’s overall mood is cuddly, like she’s just had a fantastic nap.

Andi

Ok.

The doctor walks in, with everyone behind him. He immediately checks her pupils, and then goes over her vitals while he’s talking to her.

Dr. Bates

Good morning Miss Parks.

Andi

Morning? How long was I…

(sees Diana and her voice is childlike)

Gramma?

John looks concerned, but Jenna leans in and whispers to him.

Jenna

It’s ok. She always sounds like that when she first sees Diana. The woman might seem a little cold, but she never let Andi forget she was her Gramma, not her grandmother.

John smiles; relieved and amused.

Andi

What’s going on?

Freddy

You scared the hell out of us, that’s what.

Freddy hugs Molly and smiles. Andi looks uneasy.

Andi

(to the doctor)

What happened?

dr. bates

You had a negative reaction to the anesthesia.

Andi

(groggy but firm)

And?

Dr. Bates

It caused a brief cardiac arrest. You’ve been unconscious for almost 20 hours.

Andi

Am I going to be…ok?

Everyone is anticipating his answer.

Dr. Bates

Your vitals are perfect, let’s do a quick test though, ok? Can you name everyone in the room?

Andi

Sure. Gramma Diana, Freddy, Jeanie, Jenna, Thomas...

(smiles at John)

... John, Dr. Bates and...

(she stops at Peter and says to Jenna)

Do I know him?

Everyone is smiling.

John

Andi, this is my friend Peter. He came to keep me company.

Andi

(relieved)

That’s nice.

(to Peter)

Nice to meet you.

Andi sits up and little and extends her hand to Peter, who shakes it with a friendly grin.

Peter

The pleasure is all mine Miss Parks.

Andi

Oh please. It would seem you’ve been part of my bedside vigil. I think you can call me Andi.

Peter smiles widely. Andi turns to the doctor.

Andi

So, I’m ok?

Dr. Bates

Yes, I’d say so. We’re going to have to observe you for a couple of days, to be safe. But I believe you will be just fine.

Andi

Good. And the surgery?

Dr. Bates

It went perfectly.

Andi

(sighs)

Then can I eat? I’m frigging starving.

Everyone is laughing and there’s a lot of hugging going on. John leans down and kisses Andi.

Int. hospital corridor

John is pushing Andi in a wheelchair, beside Thomas pushing Diana.

Andi

(indicating the chair)

Is this really necessary?

John

(leans in to kiss her cheek)

Yes, it is.

Andi

(sighs in frustration and turns to Diana)

Hey Gramma, are we a matched pair, or what?

Diana

I don’t believe a matched pair usually included a young filly and an old mare.

Andi

(laughs)

You’re not old. You’re as young as you feel.

Diana

So how young do you feel, my darling?

Andi

I stopped aging at twenty-four.

John

Twenty-four?

Andi

Yep. That’s when I determined that I had two choices. I could stay the same or become a grown up. I opted for the former.

Diana

Here here. And if you ever think of becoming a grown up, I’ll disown you.

Andi

(laughs)

Gramma, I already have more money than any person, ever, could need. I certainly don’t need yours too.

Diana

Well you’ll be getting it my dear. Who else would I give it to?

Andi

You should give it to Thomas. Then he can finally retire and sips umbrella drinks on a beach with beautiful Tahitian girls.

Thomas

Miss Andi!

Andi

(laughing)

Besides Gramma. It’s a moot point. You promised you’d be here forever, remember?

Diana

(smiles at her lovingly)

That’s right my darling.

Diana holds her hand as they roll down the hall.

Int. uptairs hallway

John is carrying Andi toward their bedroom.

Andi

Honestly, John. I can walk. You’re going to hurt your back.

John

My back is fine. Hush.

Andi

Hush? Don’t push it babe.

John smiles at her and walks in the bedroom. He sets her on the bed, arranging pillows so she can sit comfortably. The room is full of flowers.

Andi

More of them?

Jenna walks in with a tray. There’s a bowl of soup and a glass of water. She sets it on the table. John is rearranging some of the vases.

Jenna

As soon as I called Patricia they started showing up. Bonnie said she stopped even closing the door. She just stood out there waiting for the next batch. I still can’t believe I didn’t call Patricia sooner. I’m really sorry about that. I just wasn’t thinking.

Andi

It’s ok hon. She didn’t need to be there too, worrying a track in the floor next to you lot.

Both John and Jenna show her a look that they don’t appreciate her humor.

Andi

Ok, ok. Jenna could you bring me my laptop.

John

(turns to Andi)

No.

Andi

What? I just want to go over my emails.

John

(more firmly)

No.

Andi

John would you just…

John

Jenna, would you excuse us?

Jenna

(gives John an approving glance)

Absolutely.

John sits next to Andi on the bed. He takes her hand.

John

You are not going to work. You are not going to do anything for the next week that is remotely stressful. You’re going to relax and I’m going to take care of you.

Andi

John, sweetheart, I’m fine.

John

And I’m going to keep you that way, if I have to hog tie you to the bed.

Andi

Kinky.

John

Knock it off. No email, no phone calls from anyone who’s not calling to wish you a speedy recovery. Ted is going to take care of everything, and he’s only going to call if it’s truly urgent. He said to tell you to take it easy.

Andi

(pouty)

John, I’m going to go stir crazy. I can’t just lie around eating fricking bonbons and watching soaps.

John

(laughs)

Perish the thought.

Andi

Seriously. Just let me check my box and see if there’s anything…

John

Ok, that’s it.

John gets up and walks to the intercom. He pushes a button.

John

Thomas?

Thomas answers on the intercom after a few seconds.

Thomas

Yes sir?

John

As soon as you have a second, could you come and collect Andi’s laptop?

Thomas

Yes sir.

John

Thank you Thomas.

John turns to say something to Andi, but Thomas walks up almost instantly.

John

(startled)

That was fast.

Thomas

(smiling)

I was tidying the Green bedroom.

John

(grins)

Ahh. It’s on the table.

Thomas walks over and picks up the laptop and starts to walk towards the door.

John

And Thomas?

Thomas

(pausing to look back)

Sir?

John

Put it somewhere where she is not going to find it.

Thomas

(smiles)

I already had such a location chosen sir.

John

Thank you Thomas.

Thomas

You’re quite welcome sir.

(to Jenna)

Miss.

Andi

(grumbles)

Traitor.

Thomas winks at her and walks out of the room.  Andi smiles after him.

Andi

Ok, so what exactly am I supposed to do?

John walks around the bed and scoots in next to her. He slides behind her a little so she’s sitting against his chest.

John

We’re going to watch movies, and play board games, and I’m going to read to you, and…

Andi

You’re going to read to me? I’m not three years old anymore sweetie.

John

People stopped reading to you when you were three?

Andi

I preferred reading to myself.

John

(sighs, shaking his head)

I should’ve guessed. Trust me, it can be very a very interesting experience as an adult. And we’re also going to plan our trip.

Andi

(cuddles closer to him)

Hmm, now that does sound like fun. I’ve been thinking about that and…

She hesitates.

John

And?

Andi

I know you want to do the whole tourist thing, but what about getting a charter jet instead of flying commercial? I know, it’s a little pretentious, but I think it would be fun.

John

Sure, though I’m not sure what the fun factor is.

Andi

Well...

She lets the word linger for a second.

John

What are you cooking up in that cute little head of yours?

Andi

(smiles)

I was thinking…I always wanted to join the Mile High Club.

John laughs and hugs her close.

Int. kitchen

John, Jenna and Andi are sitting around the kitchen having lunch. The doorbell rings.

Andi

I’ll get it.

She hops off of the stool.

John

Take it easy, ok.

Andi turns and kisses him quickly.

Andi

I’m fine.

(hopeful and excited)

And it might be our vacation itinerary.

John smiles as she leaves the room.

Int. main hall

Andi walks out of the kitchen, heading for the front door, as we hear the second ring of the doorbell. She opens the door on a woman. She is a few years older than Andi, dressed in expensive but hip clothing. Her look is very metrosexual, though almost leaning asexual. Andi hugs her immediately.

Andi

Anne, babe, finally!

They give each other an affectionate, but sisterly, kiss. Then Andi pulls her in and shuts the door for another hug.

Anne

Sorry sweetie, it was such a nightmare.

Andi

Oh, I’m so sorry. How are you doing?

Anne

I’m hung over, I need a manicure, and I’m jetlagged. How would you be doing?

Anne starts walking towards the Conversation room.

Int. conversation room

Anne seems very at home here. She throws her jacket and purse onto an arm chair that she couldn’t see walking in the direction she did. She pours herself a drink at the bar and sits down in another chair.

Andi

Better?

Anne

(smiles)

Yes.

Andi

Seriously?

Anne

(frowns)

Don’t tell Patricia, ok?

Andi

Why?

Anne

Because she’s relieved he’s gone, and I don’t want to make her feel guilty.

Andi

I’m sure she’s not... ok, yes she is. She already feels guilty.

Anne

See, I’m not gonna pile on more. Part of me is relieved. Just relieved we’ll never have to fight again. I’m hoping he’s got more insight in the next life. But I still…

Andi

Care?

Anne

(tears in her eyes)

Yeah. I don’t know why.

Andi

He was your father honey. Before all the bullshit, he was your dad. And except for that one little character flaw, he was a pretty good one.

Anne

Hating your daughter, that’s a character flaw?

Andi

He never hated you.  You know that’s not true.

Anne

No, he didn’t, but he hated Patricia.

Andi

I’m afraid I can’t argue with that one either.

Anne

My dad could never get you. He never understood it. You loved him almost as much as I did, but when the ‘shit’ hit the fan, you turned cold as stone. You gave him more evil eyes than Patricia or I ever did.

Andi

Yeah, I regretted that sometimes. I felt like I should explain it to him, like it was cruel to treat him that way when he had no idea why. But it was better than hitting him, which is all I could think to do every single moment I looked at him.

Anne

I know. Though I think hitting him might’ve been kinder. I’ve seen that look once, and it hurts even when it’s not directed at you.

Andi

(lost in memory)

Man, I was so happy for you that night. When you announced you and Patricia were getting married. I don’t know if you could tell…

Anne

You were jumping up and down like a fricking twit.

Andi

(laughs, but then turns sad)

And then he had to say those things. He had to... in front of everyone. It wasn’t right. I could’ve forgiven a lot of reactions, but not that.

Anne

And that’s what it comes down to for you and me. Your dad and my dad should’ve been brothers, because they were uncles to each of us. And I know you don’t talk a lot about how hurt you were, because you think you don’t have as much right to be angry as I do. But you’re wrong.

Andi

(smiles)

So now that he’s gone, shouldn’t it be easier to forgive him?

Anne

You’d think so.

Andi

But we can’t. And it has nothing to do with what he said or did that night. It’s how we saw him afterwards. For me; he had lied to me for years, pretended to be a good guy, and now I saw his true colors. And that was because he hurt you most, by never trying once to make amends, or even just civility.

Anne

(sighs)

Maybe we’ll figure it out one day.

Andi

(smiles)

Let’s hope.

Anne

(grins)

Ok, what is up with this guy?

Andi

(grinning broadly)

What do you mean?

Anne

Patricia could not stop talking. I was getting jealous, I swear. “She was just radiant, the glow off her was really sensual, I could not get over the transformation.”

Andi

She did not say that!

Anne

Oh yes she did. I am not kidding you, I was getting peeved. She made it up to me though.

Anne gives a suggestive wink.

Andi

(laughing)

I’m sure she did.

Anne

Seriously though, damn you do look good. I’m thinking I gotta apologize to Patricia. Cause, you are fine.

Andi

Knock it off.

Anne

So, who is he?

Andi

You should know.

Anne

What?

Andi

It’s John.

Anne

John who?

Andi

You know, the ‘lunch date.’

Anne

(realizing who she means)

Oh my god, are you serious? You’re dating him?

Andi

Sort of.

Anne

What does that mean?

Andi

I did something a little wild. I offered him a six month ‘position’.

Anne

As what, you’re pool boy?

Andi

It’s not like that. Ok, maybe there’s a little, or a lot of that, but that’s not really the point. He’s been keeping me company, helping me deal.

Anne

(quivery)

I’m so sorry, if I’d have known, I would’ve... but by the time Patricia heard you were already ok, and...

Andi

(tears in her eyes)

I know you would have been there. It’s ok.

Anne grabs Andi’s hand and they exchange a caring smile.

Anne

(perks up)

Ok, so you rented a boyfriend.?

Andi

Basically, yes.

Anne

You know that thing I said about you needing to take more chances in life?

Andi

(grinning)

Yeah?

Anne

You’re on the right track, but I think you might want to slow down just a touch.

Andi

(laughing)

You have no idea.

John calls for Andi from the hallway.

Andi

Speak of the devil.

(yelling)

In the Convo room babe.

Andi gets up and walks towards the door. As he comes in she reaches and up gives him a long kiss. We see a quick glimpse of Anne looking confused.

John

(smiling)

Well, hello.

Andi

(nips at his lip)

Hi.

John

What brought this on, not that I object?

Andi

(playful)

I’m in a good mood.

John

And that’s because?

Andi

(turns and points to Anne)

Look who’s back.

John just then realizes there’s someone else in the room. Andi is curled in his arms as he turns to greet the woman.

John

I’m sorry, have we met?

Andi pulls away, looking at him in confusion.

Andi

What do you mean?

Anne

Andi.

Andi

What?

Anne

Andi that’s not him.

Andi

(pulls away a little more)

What are you talking about?

Anne

That’s not the guy I set you up with.

John

(face ashen)

You’re Anne.

Andi pulls out of his arms and takes a few steps backwards.

Andi

John?

John

Andi, wait.

Andi

(tearing up and freaking out)

Wait? Wait for what? What the hell is going on John?

John

I can explain.

Andi

Explain what?

John

My service didn’t get the name wrong. I was supposed to be meeting a different Ms. Parks, and you were supposed to be meeting a different Jonathan.

Andi

So, when I, when I asked you…

John

That’s when I realized.

Andi

And you didn’t say something?

(almost screaming)

Why the hell didn’t you say something?!

She stalks past him out of the room. He doesn’t realize at first that she’s leaving the room. When he does he goes out through the Light room and cuts her off at the end of the main hall.

Int. main hall

Anne follows them out and watches from a corner. Thomas and Jenna eventually come too. Andi doesn’t appear to notice.

John

Andi, please. Let me explain.

Andi

(with fury)

Yes John, please explain. Please explain exactly why you’ve been lying to me for months?

John

I haven’t been. Ok, we barely ever talk about that, and I try to find non-committal ways to respond.

Andi

You really want to go into semantics right now?

John

Sorry, I’m sorry. You’re right. I’ve been lying to you. I am sorry for lying to you, but I’m not sorry that I did it.

Andi

Of course not. You’ve got a few grand in the bank to keep that chill off.

John

(winces)

It’s not like that, damn it Andi, don’t do that.

Andi

Then what was it like John?

John

Andi, I just wanted to be there for you.

Andi

Bullshit!

Andi starts to stalk away. He doesn’t try to stop her at first.

John

I love you.

Andi stops. She turns around coldly.

Andi

What did you say?

John

I said, I love you.

Andi

I’m sorry?

John

Andi, please?

Andi

Fuck you. You don’t get to ask me for anything. You’re a liar.

John

Andi, listen. You were sitting there, looking so vulnerable, and so... this amazing woman, with an amazing heart, and a lonely soul. And all you wanted was someone to hold, someone to show you some attention, someone to talk to. And at that moment, there was nothing I wanted more in this world than to give you that. But I knew, if I told you the truth, you would’ve just run away. I couldn’t let you go.

Andi

I don’t have to listen to this crap. Why should I believe a word of it?

John

Because I love you, and you love me.

Andi

(laughs coldly)

You’re really not the brightest bulb in the box, you know that?

John

Andi, please, don’t.

Andi

Don’t what. You expect me to stand here and feed your delusions about you and I? Sorry kiddo, you blew that ride. I don’t love you John. I am amused and flattered by you. You’re just an entertainment; an expensive one.

Jenna gasps quietly.

John

(winces like she’s throw a punch)

Andi, please stop.

Jenna

(no one but her can hear)

Oh sweetie, stop.

Andi

Get out.

John

Baby.

Andi

(screams at him)

Don’t you dare!

John

(he’s crying now)

Andi, I love you.

Andi

You have no one to blame but yourself for that.

Thomas and Anne both gasp audibly. Jenna walks to Andi.

Jenna

(tearfully)

Andi, stop.

Andi

(tears filling her eyes)

Did you know about this?

Jenna

(afraid)

I suspected. Andi, stop it.

Andi

(short sobs escaping)

You don’t get to tell me what to do right now Jenna.

Jenna is looks hurt and guilty. Andi takes a few steps towards the door and turns back into the room. Her voice is solid again.

Andi

Thomas.

Thomas

(straightens up)

Yes Miss Andi.

Andi

Have Jackson bring around the truck. Help Mr. Hampton pack his belongings, and have Jackson take him wherever he wishes to go.

Thomas

(head dips slightly)

Yes Miss.

Andi grabs John’s keys off the hall table. She pulls off the added loop that has the keys to the house and the Jeep, and puts the rest down. She starts to walk to the front door. Just as John’s about to say something she turns around.

Andi

Anne?

Anne

Yes honey?

Andi

Would you mind a house guest tonight?

Anne

Of course not.

She quickly goes in the Conversation room and grabs her things. She comes out into the hallway and walks to the front door. She is opening it when Andi talks again.

Andi

Jenna?

Jenna

Yes Andi?

Andi

Call the security company and have John’s code removed from the system immediately.

Jenna

Andi?

Andi

(breathing heavily)

What?

Jenna

(looking down)

I’ll take care of it.

Andi

(to John)

In case I haven’t made my point yet; I never want to see you again.

John

Let me ask you one question first?

Andi

What?

John

If none of it mattered to you, why are you so angry?

Andi

Get out of my house John.

She turns. Anne walks out the door and Andi follows, closing it behind her. Jenna sits on a chair. She is hugging herself and rocking. John goes and crouches down in front of her.

John

I’m sorry Jenna. I’m so sorry. She’ll come around, she’ll forgive you. I never wanted it to be like this.

Jenna

(smiles sadly)

Oh John, it’s not that. I know she’ll forgive me. But I’ve never seen her so angry or so hurt. I’m afraid she may never forgive you, or herself.

John gets up, over and sits heavily on the stairs and buries his head in his hands. He is trying to breathe normally but a sob is escaping every so often. Thomas walks over and puts his hand on John’s shoulder in a fatherly gesture.

Thomas

Come along sir. Retreat to fight another day.

John looks up at him, smiling through tears. Jenna walks over to them and offers him a hand up. They get up and walk up the stairs.

Int. the street outside peter’s apartment building.

Peter is walking out the front door and gives John a big non-guy hug as soon as he’s out of the truck. John introduces Peter and Thomas, they shake hands companionably, and all start taking John’s things upstairs. When they have the last load between him and Peter, John says his goodbyes.

John

Thank you, for everything, Thomas.

Thomas

You’re quite welcome sir.

John

And thank Jenna again for me?

Thomas

Certainly sir.

John shakes Thomas hand and then turns to gather up a box.

Thomas

(from inside the truck)

Mr. Hampton?

John

Thomas, you didn’t call me sir.

Thomas

(smiles)

She gets the wit from her father, but the passion from her mother. They were an amazing pair; as are the two of you.

Thomas smiles again and pulls away. Peter slaps John on the back, smiles, and they go inside.

B) John is waiting on the phone, then gets a response, and

resignly says goodbye and hangs up.

C) Andi leaving for work, out the main hall; Jenna comes

out of the kitchen in time to see her leave. Jenna is

   trying not to cry.

D) Andi, in her office, staring out the window.

E) John, in Peter’s apartment, staring out the window.

F) Andi in a board room distractedly, until someone gets

   her attention.

G) John walking through a gallery. He sees a painting

(Chegall’s Lovers in Moonlight) and stops to stare at it.

Fade to:

int. solarium

Andi by a window, curled up in an old armchair, staring outside. Jenna walks in.

Jenna

You have a visitor.

Peter walks in. Andi stands up and takes a few steps towards him. Jenna leaves quietly.

Andi

Peter.

Peter

Hello Miss Parks.

Andi

I told you to call me Andi.

Peter

I wasn’t sure…

Andi

What are you doing here Peter?

Peter

I don’t know. I guess, just hoping I can convince you to listen to him. Maybe even let him come see you.

Andi

(sits back down and looks out the window again)

Peter, I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be rude, but I don’t want to hear anything you have to say about John.

Peter

(sits next to her)

Andi, please. He’s miserable. I’ve never seen him like this. He’s so lost. Just give him a chance, to explain.

Andi

I’ve heard enough explanations.

Peter

If you won’t listen to him, then listen to me, please. When John came to my place to get his things…

Andi

(interrupts)

His things? You were roommates.

Peter

Not exactly. He and this girl he’d been living with broke up. And he needed a place to crash for a little while. Well, he ended up staying for a while. I just couldn’t kick him to some crappy little apartment.

Andi

So he was homeless too. That’s just perfect. Penniless artist and pathetic heiress.

Peter

It’s not like that. Andi, he didn’t give a shit about the money. You have to know that.

Andi

I don’t know any such thing!

Peter

Please, just listen. When he came to get his things, and he told me what he’d done, I was... I told him he was nuts. I told him to tell you the truth right then.

Andi

Why would he bother? He’d hit pay dirt.

Peter

No, he was in love. I saw it then, and that’s the only reason I stopped badgering him about telling you the truth. He was sure this was the only way to be there for you. He wanted so badly to protect you, to make you happy. He was already head over heals. I saw it, everyone saw it. You had to see it Andi.

Andi

I’m sorry Peter, but I have a meeting in the city at 1. Jenna will show you out.

Peter gets up but she leaves the room quickly. Peter leaves the solarium and finds his way back to the main hall.

Int. main hall

Jenna is walking away from the front door.

Peter

Is she gone?

Jenna

Yeah. I take it, it didn’t go well?

Peter

(frowns)

No, it didn’t. She won’t listen.

Jenna

She won’t even let me mention his name anymore. She just gets up and leaves the room. What are we going to do?

Peter

I may have an idea; though we’re going to need everyone’s help.

Jenna

Not a problem. What do you have in mind?

Peter

(smiles conspiratorially)

Ever heard of a blitz.

Int. dining room

There is clearly a dinner party. Patricia, Anne, Freddy, Molly and Diana are all there. Jenna and Thomas are serving. Andi is distracted, and everyone pretends not to notice.

Int. light room

After dinner, they are all sitting chatting. Jenna and Thomas are bringing in trays of drinks, when Freddy stands up and walks to the center of the room.

Freddy

Ladies and gentlemen, I think it is time to begin.

Andi

(confused)

Begin what?

Freddy

Andi, this isn’t exactly a dinner party. It’s, well it’s something like an intervention.

Andi

(standing up)

What? What are you talking about?

Freddy

We’re worried about you.

Andi

(falsely)

I’m fine.

Patricia

You’re not fine sweetie.

Jenna

No you’re not.

Andi

Look, maybe I’ve been a little quietly lately.

Anne

You’re practically catatonic at times.

Diana

It has to stop my darling. You can’t go on like this.

Andi

(tears in her eyes)

I can’t do this. Please, just leave me alone.

Andi starts to walk towards the door, but she stops when John walks in. Peter is following him.

Andi

What the hell are you doing here?

Freddy

I invited him.

Andi

(turns angrily on Freddy)

How dare you? You had no right. Who the hell do you think you are? You are not my goddamn big brother Frederick.

(turns to John)

Get out!

Diana

(stands, it is clearly difficult)

That’s enough young lady.

Andi

(cowed a little)

Gramma…

Diana

You, my dove, have the mind of a steal trap and a wit that could cut glass. But you have to stop using it like a shield around you. I know what you’re doing. If you hurt them enough, they’ll run away in fear. Well it ends now. This is not like you. You do not attack, and you don’t shred the people you love. And you are not leaving this room until I see some semblance of my Alexandra again. Do you hear me?

Andi

(tears in her eyes)

Damn you Nana.

Diana

Improving.

Andi

(smiles, she turns and hugs Freddy)

I’m sorry.

Freddy

(welling up)

It’s ok.

Andi

(to the rest of the room, but clearly not John)

I’m so sorry.

Everyone is in some state of tears. John looks pleading at her.

Andi

(turns to John with a civil stare)

I’m sorry John. I’m sorry I was so hurtful and spiteful. But that’s as much as you’re going to get from me. So would you please leave?

John

Andi, please. You owe me a few minutes.

Andi

(angrily)

I owe you nothing.

John looks like he’s a little staggered.

Freddy

Actually, you do... owe him some time, that is.

Andi and John both turn to Freddy.

Andi/John

What?

Freddy

(smiles devilishly)

Didn’t you read your contract?

Andi

(suspiciously)

I knew it was too easy. What did you do Freddy?

John walks up to stand closer to Andi so he can see Freddy more clearly.

Freddy

The last paragraph.

Andi slaps John’s arm. He rubs at it.

John

Ow.

Andi

I told you that last paragraph was something fishy.

John

(trying not to grin at her)

Alright Fred, stop chewing and spit it out.

Freddy

In plain English: You agreed to spend 6 months together. If either of you decides to end the ‘relationship’ before that time, the other party can request a forum to state any and all objections and present their full argument, before a legal arbitrator if requested, before the agreement can be terminated.

Andi

Are you fuc...

(to Diana)

... sorry Gramma. Are you kidding me?

Freddy

I’m afraid not.

John

Freddy, you are a damn...

(Andi slaps his arm again)

... sorry Diana.

Andi

This is ridiculous. He committed fraud!

Freddy

No, he didn’t. The contract made no mention of John’s profession, and since it’s listed as “artist” on his last 5 income tax returns...

John

(grinning)

You did a background check?

freddy

Why do you think it took a few days to complete such a basic contract, even with the mounds of ludicrous distraction I threw in? (to Andi) And you already confirmed John’s claim that he never specifically confirmed your presumption about his profession.

andi

Aren’t you supposed to be my lawyer?

Freddy

(tenderly)

Yes, I am. I’m also your friend, and on both counts, I’m acting in your best interest. You know you love him Andi.

Andi

I do not love him.

John winces again and hangs his head.

Jenna

(quietly from the corner)

Yes you do.

Andi looks at her, stunned.

Anne

Yes, you do.

Patricia

You do.

Andi’s gaze is following each of them, watching them each look her in the eye. John’s smile keeps getting bigger, but Andi is oblivious.

Diana

Well of course you do.

Peter

(pipes up)

Do I get a vote?

Jenna

(smiles at him)

I think you’ve earned one, seeing as this was your idea.

Andi turns quickly to Peter and looks at him in surprise.

Peter

I don’t know you that well Andi, but even I can see it. You love him. And given the way that he’s been sitting, on my couch, like a lump, for the last two weeks... I know he loves you.

Finally Andi’s gaze turns to Thomas.

Thomas

Yes Miss, you do.

Andi looks defeated and drops her head.

John

Andi, I won’t ask for a hearing, or some kind of court action. Just let me ask you one question, and promise you’ll give the answer that’s in your heart.

Andi

(resigned)

Alright, what do you want to ask me?

John

Could you look at me?

Andi

Is that you’re question?

Diana

Don’t be a pain in the ass dear.

Everyone looks at Diana. Andi’s head comes whipping around and she stares. John tries not to laugh.

Andi

Gramma!

Diana

Oh do stop gaping and look at the man.

Andi turns to John and looks him in the eye.

Andi

Go on.

John

Andi, I know you don’t trust it, but I promise you, I have loved you from the first day we met. And if you’ll just give me the chance, I’ll prove it to you, and I’ll take care of you like no one ever has.

Andi

(getting emotional)

Is there a question coming?

John

(gets down on one knee and pulls out an engagement ring)

Alexandra, will you marry me?

Andi looks at the ring and is holding back tears. She hesitates before answering.

Andi

No.

The whole room gasps.

John

Andi...

Andi walks around him and out of the room. He quickly gets up and follows her.

Int. main hall

Andi is only a few feet away from John, and the rest of the group has quickly followed them. John hesitates for a moment, and then he starts walking quickly towards her.

John

What the hell.

He grabs her, spins her around, and kisses her passionately. Everyone is staring stunned, not sure what will happen. After a few seconds, Andi is returning the kiss. The kiss is long, passionate, and filled with yearning. It seems to go on forever, and they both sigh into the longing they’ve been feeling. Finally, she pulls away and leans into him, unsure of her legs.

John

So here’s my point. You know, now that everyone who matters to you has told you; you love me. And you know I love you. And you know that I did one dumb thing. The only defense I can offer is this. I fell for you so fast, and then I saw the fear, the distrust, and then a way around it, a way to touch your heart. How could I not have taken the chance? How could I have let you walk, probably kicking yourself, from that restaurant? Fate handed you to me; I couldn’t give you up so easily. So your first choice is to forgive me this one desperate act, and we can try that whole happily ever after thing. The second is you can turn us into Pyramus and Thysby, and we both either end up dead or trapped behind a wall for the rest of our lives. Which is it going to be?

Andi

What was the first option again?

John

Don’t be mean.

Andi

(looking up at him)

Promise me that you love me.

John

I promise.

Andi

Promise me you won’t ever pretend to be anything you’re not. Never again.

John

I promise.

Andi

Promise me that when I give everything away to charity and I’m poor that you’ll still want me.

John

I promise.

Diana

Like hell…

Andi

Oh relax Gramma, I didn’t mean it literally.

John

(smiling)

If you had, my answer wouldn’t change.

Andi

(hesitates a second and then smiles)

Ok, but you’re still on an allowance. Can’t have you painting your way through my money.

John

(smiles brightly and kisses her again)

Ok, but you have to stop working so hard, eat better, and start working out.

Andi

(gives him a suspicious look)

So you butter me up to tell me to get skinny?

John

Don’t be ridiculous. I don’t want you to turn into some hard body. But you need to start taking better care of yourself.

(leaning in close to her lips)

We have to stay in shape, or one of us is gonna give the other a heart attack one night.

John kisses her tenderly and seductively.

Andi

(playfully)

Hmm, now does the medical advice cost extra?

John

On the house.

(slips the ring on her finger)

Marry me?

Andi

(looks down at it)

I want to say yes.

John

(imploring)

Then just say it.

Andi

It seems too easy.

John

You think this has been easy? We’ve had a strange road to get here. But now that we are, you just have to take one last step. Let me love you, forever.

Andi

Ok, maybe not so easy.

John

Take a chance. What’s stopping you? You take what comes to you, and you do the best you can with it, and your fate will find you. Remember? Well, it found us.

Andi

(doing a Kate Beckinsale impression)

So unabashedly romantic.

John

Serendipity.

Andi

(laughs while she replies)

Ok, I’ll marry you.

John grabs her and spins her around enthusiastically, then he stops and kissing her deeply. He pulls away.

John

Seriously?

Andi

Yes.

John

No, I mean, seriously? I won you with Serendipity?

Andi

You object?

John

(smiles)

I’ll take what I can get.

John kisses her again.

Fade out.
