Archie Modern fairytales get a bad
rap, but they can be quite charming with the right elements in place.
Witherspoon deserves huge props for this.
I love that they have the kids give
the moral of the story, and end it with Lemon in his tiny boat. It cuts the
sentimentality nicely.
Gotta love a man kissing a girl
immediately after she calls him a shit. :)
There is a glaring fault. He
should've recognized her voice faster, with as much time as he spent not seeing
her at all.
I love that she goes back into the
'vintage' clothes when she puts the mask on at the party. The wardrobe shifts
really set the character.
Penelope writing the letter to
Edward is another addition I wish they hadn't left out of the other version. A
moment of redemption is nice.
And Jake stealing the mother's voice
is not only funny, but probably saved Penelope from having a broken home after
the previous scene.
I think the scene after the curse is
lifted is a little longer too. There's more of a mother/daughter moment there.
The other interesting thing about
the costumes/sets, is how the mother seems to subconsciously create a fairytale
land around them.
I love how the wedding dress looks
more than a little ridiculous earlier, when it looks so magnificent later.
Plus, WTF is w/the earrings?
OMFG, they cut out the funniest
little bit of Lemon fucking with Campion in the jail. Those two should do a
buddy movie together. :D
I really never would've thought that
Nick Frost could do such a great US accent.Plus, it's hilarious when he says
"pirate pad."
I love that the mom's depiction of
her fan/friends is perfectly accurate. She just doesn't realize there are a few
real people in her life.
@danielspengies I'd classify this as
more of an all around romcom, i.e. Princess Bride. The romantic element isn't
central.
I love how Witherspoon doesn't make
the best friend a fantastic new confidant. No relationships in this movie grow
immediately. Refreshing.
I know Russell Brand's part is
small, but I still got a kick out of seeing him.
And again, they cut this fantastic
little moment when Max/Johnny thinks on the fact that Penelope is out in the
world.
I love that the bartender just grins
when she let's the first beer mug fall. Definitely a fairytale kind of movie.
:)
I love the realization on Lemon's
face, when he finally understands what he's been chasing all this time.
LOL, and they also edited out a
scene where Penelope happens into sex shop. That's just sad.
Oooh, the longer version of
Max/Johnny hitting bottom is so much stronger. The sound edited into that shot
is magnificent.
The view out of Penelope's hotel
window reminds me of the aerial shots of the Moulin Rouge Lurhmann loved to fly
through.
Oh now, that's just bad. The short
version left out a very cute little innuendo from Grant. That was funny.
The gate opening scene is everything
you'd want it to be. Visually stunning, which let's Ricci play the reaction big
(not easy in a scarf).
But he was a giant idiot for not
telling her his real name before he said he couldn't marry her.
You've gotta give Max/Johnny credit.
He recovered from the shock quickly. I'd have half wondered if it was faked in
his shoes.
I sometimes hate that I can't play
Chess. It seems like a great way to spend time with someone.
Yeah, this is definitely longer.
There's more to the 'find his instrument' scene by a mile. Which is kind of
awesome b/c I love that scene.
I think people imagine this as an
'American' fairytale b/c McAvoy and Grant do US accents, but it's so clearly in
a fictional land.
James and Christina do a really good
job of playing as if they are in the room together. The chemistry is completely
there in seconds.
Even with the crazy nose, Ricci is
far too attractive for everyone one of those jokers to have run.
I'm trying to imagine how the story
might've played out if Lemon had found the actual Max Campion at the gambling
place.
Penelope's room is a great example
of the fantastic set design on this movie. I also love when they juxtapose it
with the news room.
Huh, I think I'm watching an
extended cut. Groovy.
And Peter Dinklage; man that dude is
a riot. When I watched him in The Baxter, I couldn't stop laughing whenever he
was on.
Richard E. Grant is such an
underrated actor. I've just adored that man for years and years.
Simon Woods plays a posh jack-ass so
well. He's quite adorable additionally.
Jeez, I just spent 10 minutes online
trying to remember why I looked up Ronni Ancona a couple weeks ago. Should've
looked in the Self: QI :)
Catherine O'hara rocks in every way
possible. Just saying. :)
Ok, time to start Penelope. And FTR,
I adore Stone Village Pictures logo. It's even cuter than Pixars.
I've decided I'm doing a CT Tweets About
tonight. Why? Because I burned my finger cooking dinner and I need a Penelope
pick-me up.
