Is Colbert losing it?

(originallly posted on my AFF blog)

Generally I get an idea about something, and then I look around online, hoping to find that some clever person has put up a funny story about it. So tonight I went looking, and I could not find any hint of the question that’s been floating around in my head for a while. Of course, if there are such articles, I’d love to be directed. But since I found none, I ask…Is Colbert losing it? I’m referring, of course, to Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report.

Now, I’m not saying he’s nuts (though I would never be surprised to hear that he described himself as a water chestnut). What I’m saying is this. In the last year, I swear he’s come closer and closer to just breaking down in front of the camera and calling it quits. It’s like the facade of conservative is breaking apart and he’s just barely keeping it together at this point.

The reason I’m getting this feeling is two-fold. Stephen used to barely ever break. He might grin a little heavy, but he rarely busted out in laughter, even when the stuff he said was beyond ludicrous. He’s been cracking more and more, to the point of not even getting through the first segment without at least a one real laugh. Secondly, he has always stayed in character. Sure, the conservative talk was laced with liberal jabs, but he still played his part. Things have been far less subtle, as of late. At times, he’s flat out lampooning his own character.

I’ve been wondering what his breaking point will finally be, or if any positive changes in our political environment will put him back on course. If he does just crack, that’ll be one hell of an episode to watch.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize, but I’m out. I have nothing left to say at this point. I can’t even pretend that I’m behind the dumb crap happening in this country. If I try, I’m pretty sure my brain will explode.”

And then there will be a cheesy graphic of his head blowing up.
