It is quite obvious that you are young. You never grew up in a school where daily drills were the commom place; of hiding under your desk from an atomic bomb! Yes, there were the McCarthy years! There was a Cuban Missle Crisis too! I grew up on Air Force Bases where my father gave 24 years of his life turning Communists to keep America safe. Did you know that the Soviet Union had sent many missles to Cuba that would have wiped out the United States? Did you know that we all held our breaths as our President, a fairly young man, John F. Kennedy, bluffed his way through the crisis threatening to blow Cuba off the map and start a nuclear war with Russia?

Yes, the McCarthy years were very real. It wasn’t forward thinking that had people arrested or brought before a Senate hearing. It was actual treason. These poor ‘forward thinkers’ as you have labeled them, were infiltrating our Institutions of higher learning where government secrets were kept or they were funding the selling of the secrets. They put our whole way of life in jeopardy and they were far from being anything but a pathethic excuse for human beings. They sold out this country. Yet, you calmly sit behind your computer and judge an era you know nothing about.

The extremists from the left are just as loud as any right extremists; if not louder! They were behind the legalization of murdering children in Rowe vs Wade. Are they now sitting quietly as they support the murder of babies who are born? Yes, this is your quiet group you speak of. They would like for a child who is not wanted by the mother, to be born, then ushered into a dark corner to die in a hospital and not only are we supposed to support this but we are supposed to pay for it.

Socialized medicine, you say? Well, are you are aware that in the countries that this exists, that they come here for better treatement? The ultimate plan for healthcare is to mimick that of a VA Hospitals and they are the most mismanaged and ill prepared healthcare program in the United States. There are 3rd World Countries that have better treatment for their elderly or veteran soldiers who must go to these reviled institutions that dare to call themselves hospitals.

What happened to Medicare this year? It has reduced benefits and most doctors will no longer accept it. I am unfortunately on SSDI, but let me tell you, I worked hard for over 30 years in my career and I earned the right for my body to be worked to death. But, will my many years of paying into Medicare benefit me? No! Absolutely not! The illnesses and disease I suffer from are in a category that require MANY specialists and not one will any longer accept Medicare! Thank you Obama! Do you think it will get any better? Do you think that a government sanctioned health care benefit of any kind will help those who really need care? Absolutely not! Medicare pays for 3 prescriptions a month, I have 12. Fortunately, my spouse is still able to work, although each day I see he grows more weary as he should have retired at 30 years of service to his job. But, he cannot, due to the costs we must pay and there is not a single plan that the government has that will make things better. They only exasterberate the problems that exist. State funded hospitals have always taken in those without insurance. But for us who have worked, and worked more than one job at a time to survive, and can no longer work; well, we will suffer the greatest.

Shall we destroy all our nuclear weapons? Everyone in the United States should knw this country would never destroy another with a nuclear weapon. We learned our leason in the atomic weapons of Japan and we feel the pains today still. But, the weapons are necessary for a stategic offensive and defense of this great nation or is this nation not worth fighting for anymore? To destory our nuclear weapons would weaken as to our super power view and leave open other nations to attack us. If Russia gives up their nuclear weapons, oh just one weapon is goes into the hands of their vassal, Iran. Let that be on your conscience for electing this Barrack Obama into the White House! Angry, sure we are! We have good reason. There is not one fabric of this country that this man with no experience will leave alone. He is also a liar and the most deceitful kind. If I had time, I would list all his lies. but that is for another day altogether.

Until you have actually lived a bit longer than your youth of 24 years, be careful about what you wear authoritizism on. You are not an expert and the left will destroy this county. May God have mercy on all your souls for bringing this ill experienced man into the White House who has no idea what true patriotism is, as neither do you. It is thinking like yours that caused the genocide of the Jews in the days of Hitler as the Socialist party at the time thought, “What could be so wrong with these forward thinking Nazis?”

    • Kat says:

First of all, I am far from 24 years old, unless I had my son when I was 10. But no, I won’t claim to have lived through the McCarthy years. You remind me though, of the history teacher in Hiding Out, claiming a better view of history simply by having lived through a period in time. Unfortunately, your view is as reactionary as the tea baggers, and it’s laced with presumptions that aren’t based on facts.

I will clarify one point. I implied that McCarthy and the House Un-American Activies Committee were one in the same, which was inaccurate. McCarthy’s hearings weren’t tied to that House committee, particularly since McCarthy was a senator. I guess that’s a faux pas that’s quite commonly applied. And the purpose of the HUAC was a noble on the surface. But for all it’s digging, it caused irrevocable harm and did little if any good.

The HUAC threw ten Hollywood artists in jail for a year and made it virtually impossisble for them to get gainful employment in their chosen professions, all because they refused to point out other ’socialists’ and ‘communists’ they knew of. Oh, and they were meant to denouce their ties, if any, to the Communist party. That’s more like The Inquisition than a 21st century congressional hearing.

And just as 9/11 was no excuse for illegal wiretapping, Guantanamo Bay, The Patriot Act, Abu Ghraib, water-boarding or Toby Keith’s “boot up your ass” lyrics; there was no justification for the witch trials that took place in D.C. during the forties and fifties. The Cold War had some heated moments, but it does not justify punishing American citizens for their ideologies or associations. Because the last time I checked, joining a socialist or communist singles group doesn’t automatically mind-meld you with the KGB. If it did I’d have a V for Vendetta mask on (that would be Libertarians btw).

Hollywood artists who refused to offer up their co-workers as bait were not infiltrating anything or threatening any persons way of living. For all of the strong arm tactics used, no evidence was ever found of Hollywood being infiltrated and manipulated by the Communist Party or any other ’subversive’ group. The only thing they found out was that artists aren’t afraid to examine new ways of looking at the world, trying to find the pieces to fix their own.

And General George Marshall, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, was not a dangerous subversive no matter how much time McCarthy spent spreading those lies. Just like Obama is not a Socialist. If he were, the left would like him a lot more right now. But once again the fringes get confused. We’re not upset with Obama because he’s not more like you, we’re upset because he’s not more like us.

The funny thing is, yours is the revisionist history. Every book/movie/article I’ve read on the McCarthy/HUAC/Hoover activities paints the same basic picture; people being scared into turning on one another during a time of fear. A fear that was clearly pushed further by the government of the time. Men like McCarthy and Hoover made a name for themselves in history, just like Anslinger did with a plant that had never caused a single death or crime, by trying to unite people around a common imagined enemy. Then it was mostly communism. This time socialism is the ideology du jour.

You should read Lionel Stander’s remarks to HUAC. They are a very clear indicator of what has happened before and is happening now…

I know of a group of fanatics who are desperately trying to undermine the Constitution of the United States by depriving artists and others of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness without due process of law…. I can tell names and cite instances and I am one of the first victims of it…. [This is] a group of ex-Fascists and America-Firsters and anti-Semites, people who hate everybody including Negroes, minority groups and most likely themselves…. [T]hese people are engaged in a conspiracy outside all the legal processes to undermine the very fundamental American concepts upon which our entire system of democracy exists.

      As for your other comments…

Your position as a Pro-Lifer is clear. On this we will have to disagree. I prefer to focus on the betterment of the existing life of the person (i.e. the woman) over the life of a theoretical potential person (i.e. the fetus). And I have to wonder. If those guys worrying that Obama’s going to take their guns away (because he put that at the top of his agenda didn’t he?) would change their tune to “my body, my choice” if the government institued mandatory yearly prostate exams. And the insurance companies you so clearly love, maybe they should start paying for birth control and stop paying for boner pills. And your depiction of an abortion might be picturesque, but it’s entirely insultingly inaccurate.

Your facts about Socialized Medicine are patently false. Show me an article, not from Fox News or it’s ilk, stating that there is an influx of people coming from countries of socialized medicine to here because of our health care system (and not because we have jobs)? Do you see a lot of Hawaiian residents coming inland for the great expensive health care of California? Nope, because they have socialized health care, and they love it. Oh, and what benefits do you think are being scaled back? The prescription ‘donut hole’ is closing in Medicare. The choice of food or medications could be eliminated entirely.

I have a grandmother who’s in her 70’s, and a slew of aunts/uncles going into Medicare not that far down the road, and believe me I know all too well the ups and downs of the program. I was on Medicaid after my son was born, and I know what a godsend that SOCIAL program is. It had it’s faults, but they are actually being addressed partly by the new bill. The entire Health Care Reform bill includes major changes that will reduce wasteful spending in the Medicare program while providing medical coverage for 30 million people and locking down coverage for millions more who’ll get sick at some point and possibly be dropped by their insurance company. It’ll reduce the rampant cases of health-cost induced bankruptcy in this country (something unheard of in countries with socialized medicine).

And the Congressional Budget Office (which is not politically affiliated) showed a 118 billion dollar reduction in the deficit along with it. That’s not propaganda, it’s fact. Now, budget estimates can be wrong, but that doesn’t mean we don’t use their input to make sound choices. If we don’t, the CBO’s entire reason for existing goes out the window.

In fact, if you read the actual plans involved in Health Care Reform you will find out just how much money you and your spouse will save this month. Here is a list of 10 things just coming in the first 6-months of HCR. And you won’t see a death panel among them.

Well I’m not sure how Nuclear Proliferation factors into this, but let me assure you that there’s a reason that Mutually Assured Destruction spells MAD. But in case you missed it, It was President Bush Sr who actually started the process of reducing our nuclear arsenal, in 1991, when the USSR dissolved. And George Jr was also in favor of reduction. I would be surprised to hear of a single president, since we got the bomb, who wouldn’t have preferred we’d never discovered it.

And what’s more; I don’t give a shit how mad you are. I spent 8 years pissed as hell as I watched Bush start two pointless wars, lied about why he started at least one of them, drove our economy into the ground, and took away our civil liberties. And no matter how much we hated him, you never heard Keith Olbermann even hint at using a gun to eliminate our problem. No one tried to claim he wasn’t an actual citizen. All we did was make fun of his really lousy vocabulary and picture him and Dan Quayle running through a field of poppies. I think you should also watch the Law & Order episode with the pissed off soccer-dad who claims Sports Rage when he murders his son’s coach for keeping his kid out of a big game. You might learn something important from McCoy’s closing arguments. Pointedly that there’s few actions in this world you can justify by saying you were really angry.

Shit! I missed the Nazi reference on my first read through. I should’ve just shut you down by claiming Godwin’s law. Oh well. I love to educate.

And since you asked; as my only choices were Gargamel/Smurfette or Obama/Biden, my conscience is very clear.
