CT.com is being renovated a bit folks. I’m making some additions, some corrections, some relocations, and she’s getting just a little cosmetic work done. Please be patient if sections are momentarily unavailable while I’m overhauling. You’re going to notice all kinds of new features popping up too. Feel free to comment and tell me what you think of the new functionality.
Also, you may have noticed banner ads have appeared on the blog. When the renovations are done, they will also be on the home page. No, I’m not trying a “Get Rich By Blogging!” program. It was always my intention to have a tasteful amount of ads on the site. My intent is just to make enough money to keep paying for the domain, do occasional software upgrades, and hopefully keep expanding on the site. Unfortunately, when I first launched CT.com, I realized that traditional affiliate linking (like Adsense or Amazon affiliation) was impossible. Those sites don’t like any kind of adult content, even links to adult content off site. And since I have links to my Literotica stories on here, I’m out of luck.
I considered, briefly, pulling the Efiction site into it’s own domain. But then I remembered that the entire point of creating the site was for there to be one place that was absolutely 100% mine, and pretty damned close to representative of 100% of me. I’ve have stories and articles up on different sites and blogs over the years, but there was never one place where I could connect to all the different audiences I’m used to talking to. CT.com was intended as a central location for my socio-political writing, pop-culture commentary, movie and television diatribes, my erotica, etc. I’m really not eager to break off a piece of her, just when I’m finally feeling at home in this environment.
So, I have been hunting for affiliates who aren’t so ‘family values’ orientated. Of course, I could go with some outright Adult affiliates, but then I’ll have lots of naked people all over the place, and that’s just distracting. Fact is, this site has always lived in a place between PG-13 and R. Sure, there’s some NC-17 tucked away in a corner, but I don’t want any part of her to look like you got stuck in a porn loop. I’ve compromised with some affiliation links from tools I use myself, like Freshbooks (just started in this) and Mozy (I use this in memory of hard drives lost). I’ve also signed on to help make the world a greener place by providing directing individuals to a great place to buy apparatus to smoke legal substances.
I also found a small affiliate network, Affiliate Bot, that looks promising. They don’t seem to concern themselves too much with your content as much as your overall professionalism (they encourage you to write a great “Who am I?” profile blurb) and that you’re not using objectionable material in the links themselves.
So even in selling out I will find balance, between tools for people who are broke, to toys for people who have too much money. You think I’m kidding but; have you seen the cost of the Volcano?! I’m not saying it’s not cool and spacey, but it’s also bulky and pricey. If the day ever comes again, when I’ll have disposable income to spend however I want, I’ve heard good things about the Vapir One. In fact, it was highly recommended by a wonderful souvenir shop proprietor sis and I visited with in Daytona Beach (if Purple Haze had a website, I’d link it here for free. Have to settle for directions.)
I will endeavor to keep all affiliates on the site as companies I do (or would if I could afford it) work with or buy from. I might also have some things that I’m not into myself, but I imagine my readers would be, like video games I’d suck at playing but love to watch (waiting to see if EA let’s me pimp Portal 2!). Also, for right now, I’m not only going with paid ads. If you’ve got something cool online that you’d like me to direct readers to, I’m perfectly cool trading links. If you’ve got a banner, I’ll even put it in with the rotating ones and not in a tucked away page (the former Follow Me page will be going away as soon as I get to it).
Point is, I want to assure you guys that I’m not trying to make a quick buck so much as looking to feature really cool stuff/toys/tools on the site and get the resources to continue making CT.com even better.
For those looking, the plugin that’s powering these great rotating ads is Max Ad Banners from MaxBlogPress. It’s really simple to use and it’ll let you use any kind of banner you can imagine, from any source, including just linking to the image or inputing the java/html code from the affiliate program. I haven’t gone through their other free plugins yet, but I’m already eying the Different Post Per Page plugin.
