Retro Time: Geek Moments in (my) History

Nostalgia time. This may be the only surviving piece of my former website, InnerBuffy.com. It was a site of essays examining the show, but sadly, most of the essays were lost on an old computer. Somehow, this one made it. I came across it tonight, and just had to post it.

It’s The End Of The World As We Know It…

But unlike REM, I don’t feel so fine. For seven years I have watched, no…watched isn’t right, I have existed within this universe. For an hour a week I have lived within the beautiful (if sometimes fatal) borders of Sunnydale California. And I’ve proudly stated that fact to one and many.

I’ve walked by a coffee shop and heard Willow Rosenberg playfully call her best friend a ‘bad seed’. I stood on the lawns of Sunnydale High School and watched students file in and out, stood on that same lawn saw it burn to the ground (trying not to chuckle when someone mentioned that Principle Snyder was eaten by a giant snake), and then stopped across the street to see Xander Harris’ crew build a bigger and better high school in its place. I visited the local magic shop, cheerfully greeting each new owner, wishing Rupert Giles good luck on his opening day, then expressed my shocked condolences to Anya Christina Emanuella Jenkins when I found her sitting on the curb outside the now demolished store.

I shopped at the stores in midtown, where I once thought I saw Dawn Summer’s pocket a rather odd looking toothbrush not long after a group of people sang to me about their dry-cleaning. I tried to eat at the Doublemeat Palace one time, but was interrupted by Buffy Summers doing a bad Charleston Heston impression. I was mugged in an alley by a scary, if not devastatingly sexy blonde vampire who introduced himself as Spike, and was surprised he didn’t follow me when I ran. Ok, I’ll also admit to being a tiny bit disappointed he didn’t give chase. I bumped into a sweet girl named Tara Maclay at a frat party at Sunnydale U, but she was a bit occupied by some apparitions in the form of sexually repressed adolescents. I did get to touch a very ‘interesting’ wall though.

I saw Riley Finn, a TA from the university, on the street a while before that, but I couldn’t say, “Hi”. He was stopping some looters on that very quiet night in Sunnydale. Those are some good arms to have. I worked a summer at a butcher shop, where I got to see a gorgeous guy named Angel a few times a month, and Joyce Summers would chat when she stopped in for pork chops. She was a very nice lady; although I was worried when she tried to get me to join some club she’d started called MOO.

I’ve spent eons hanging out at The Bronze, killing roaches for free drinks, and recently wondered what happened to their delicious bloomin’ onion. I even stopped a guitarist there to tell him how much I enjoyed his band, Dingoes Ate My Baby. I asked after the cute, if somewhat aloof, lead singer and said he was a god. Oz, the guitarist, called me a blasphemer. He never explained why. A girl named Cordelia Chase, who seemed out of place working at April Fools, sold me a prom dress. I saw her sporting a frisky little number that night while Jonathan handed Buffy Summer’s a beautiful little umbrella to show our appreciation for all she’s done. I saw Jonathan a few years later, and was going to say hello, but he was hanging out with some jerk off named Warren and his boyfriend Andrew.

I should’ve left recently, when half the town bolted, but somehow I couldn’t make myself skip town. Maybe it’s the many young girls who seem to be emigrating here, somehow in them I see hope for our ever growing town, and I can’t bring myself to abandon it. The fact is I might’ve left many times, when things have gotten really rough, and even the scary stuff was less scary and more cheesy, but I stayed. Why did I stay? Because I believe in this town, I believe in its people, and I believe in a wonderful woman I’ve grown up with. I believe she and her friends will always keep us safe, I believe they will always do what they must to protect us all, and I believe that they are still human beings I can relate too. I’ve laughed with them, cried with them, and rejoiced in their many accomplishments. With them I’ve wondered what the plural of apocalypse is, and am still breathing and living to this day.

There are many more than 38,500 people living in Sunnydale, although most aren’t listed in the census report. They are like myself, temporary residents who spend a few hours a month there. In a very short time, our residence status in Sunnydale will end, as the town disappears from our immediate view. We will only be able to return in our memories, and the personal ‘home’ video collections of our visits. We mourn for the loss of our connection to that incredible town, and give praise to the people who allow us to spend time there.

At the moment I’m not in Sunnydale, I’m sitting on the outside in the world where I normally reside. And as I sit there I wonder how in the world I can ever express my gratitude to the men and women who have given me the joy of access to this town and its people. I’ve thought of flowers, but I think we’re a little post-posy. I considered candy, but Dawn has informed me chocolates are lame. I’d buy jewelry, but all I could afford would be some Walmart-looking-thing So what then, can show my appreciation? The simple fact is there’s nothing. No gift, no words, and no gesture that can fully show just how grateful I am. This meager offering is the best I can do, and I know it’s not nearly enough. However I hope it will convey my love, faith, and undying devotion to the ever-growing town that has filled my heart and mind for seven years.
